IMR 4895 discontinued !!

I read this elsewhere and seems legit. That's my go to powder for my .308 Garand. What's the next best powder for this old war horse?

Even if it wasn't discontinued I'd still like to have another option. I have some Varget but not much.

I want something that's not going to beat up the op rod not that I load hot but op rods are getting hard to find and pricey.

As noted the published data is different, the manufacturer is different and most important for many of us Hodgdon explicitly distinguished the two powders when used for reduced loads.

Many of us will use IMR4895 for gas guns and somewhat reduced loads but there is no authority for IMR4895 as there is for H4895 in 60% loads. Hodgdon reports that H4895 works well at the 60% level assuming there is a book 100% load. Hodgdon also reports that IMR 4895 doesn't necessarily work - is erratic - at the 60% level, again assuming there is a book 100% load. By report IMR 4895 does generally work in reduced loads that are not reduced quite so much.

My misconception comes from "ancient knowledge" obtained from my old Speer #8 Manual which states that "Loading data for either brand are the same".

It also mentions use in loads from 1/3 reduced, to maximum.

My newer manuals don't contain this claim. jd
 
It seems that PV verified that Hodgdon had in fact discontinued it. There are a lot things going on. Many IMR and Extreme powder are not salable in Europe so General Dynamics developed the Enduron powders which are reach compliant but Hodgdon has dropped them from the IMR line. ADI has had production problems for years with plant that produces the Extreme Powders. Not sure what there plans are for compliant powders. Now Hodgdon owns the Accurate trademarks and seems to be pushing those powders. In the case of IMR 4895 there is an Accurate Powder that is either the same or slightly different. This is also true of 4350 and 4064. I think there will be some consolidation in these powders but that is strictly my opinion.

I can tolerate IMR 4895 being discontinued as long as H4895 is still being produced which I like better anyway and use in a bunch of my rifles. It's not my go to powder for the 223 Rem.

However, if they discontinue H4895 it's going to push me even closer to becoming a rim fire only shooters. :(:(:(:(

Over the years, in several forums, I'll bet most of us have seen threads such as "If you could only have one powder---" and many guys answered 4895.

I'll also bet that I'm not the only guy who has treated them as totally interchangeable. I don't actually recall mixing the remains of a IMR jug with a new batch of an H jug, but I wouldn't be surprised. jd
 
The first time I was involved with reloading was in 1960, a friends father started teaching this teenager 'how to'. A pound of 4895 was $1 per pound, primers .89 cents and Sierra 180 gr. bullets were about $3/100. So $6 bucks reloaded 100 rounds. I don't remember the price of a box of factory. But I do remember Floyd saying "find something else, that's cheaper to shoot". There was a lot of 'surplus' ammo available. I used many pounds of 4895 in a 22-50, 36.5 gr. with a 50 gr. bullet was the 'standard' load I used for about 50 years. One of the more versatile powders I've used. I guess 4895 is maybe another thing I've out lived.

Hodgdon has 8# cans of it in stock. Id be surprised if this were true. There was a false claim recently that a number of VV powders were no longer going to be sold in the US. Turned out to be bogus
 
I’m unsure if that’s true or not. But if it is I’ll be pissed. I shoot a lot of older cartridges and most aren’t in modern manuals like the 22 Savage Hi power (5.6x52R). IMR 4885 was always a go for those old guns.
