IMR 4895/4064 in 223

I have done quite a bit of searching and can not find mention of IMR 4895 or 4064 with 68gr hornady HPBT or 69 gr SMK in 223. Ifor those that have tried them I was wondering what your all's experience has been worth those. I have seen a lot about H4895 but, not the others. Thanks in advance

My older Sierra manual 4th ed. list both powders with the 69 MK and they used an AR-15 for the load work up.

IMR-4895 start 22.6 grs Max 24.6 grs.

IMR-4064 start 23.0 grs Max 24.2 grs.

My 7th ed Hornady manual list IMR-4895 but not IMR-4064 with their 68 gr bullet but you could use the Sierra data to do your work up.

IMR- 4895 start 22.6 Max 24.9 grs.

IMR-4895 works well in my .223 but H4895 is a shorter grain allowing better case filling for the heavier pills.

IMR 4064 is a little slower than IMR 4895. It is a long granual powder, poor metering but shoots good.

How has the velocities been, have you been able to get at least 2800fps? Since all I have is these two powders I am glad they should work good. Thanks for the replies.

I havent tried either of those powders in 223, I am shooting an AR and getting awesome accuracy and only pushing the hornady 68 at 2460 and the hornady 75 at 2400 16 inch barrel, 1/7 lapua brass, fed match primer, Ar comp. 68G. 21.5 75g 21.1 .5MOA 100 200 and 300 yds.

to add to my previous post another powder I have the same results with is imr8208 with 3/10 higher charge in each one, also V135 is also just about identical to the AR comp, at that pressure all my primers are great just a few slightly flat. works for me.

both are good fir 223 in that weight. 4064 works better for 68+ in my guns. imr 4895 is my go to powder for 68 grainers.

The reloading data section of Hodgdon's web site has data on both 4895 (both IMR and H) and 4064. The max loads listed exceed 2800 fps, significantly so with both 4895s. They do not state (that I noticed) the type or barrel length of the test rifle(s?) used.

+1 to these numbers.

My 20" barrel chrono'd a 77gr with 21.2 at the low 2500s. I found better accuracy (different bullet) at 2650 range which is 21.8gr with the Sierra MK.

69gr Sierras shoot great at the 2900fps range out of a 20"

I used H4895 with 75gr Hornady HPBTs for my 600 yard match load. Gave me about 1/2 MOA as long as I did my part.

Diddo....metering does suck , but IMR 4064 with 53gr SMK is still the BEST combo for my 223.
