Hi,I need some help.I have a lot of IMR 4831 powder, and a lot of military 140 gr bullets,my question is, how many grains of this powder do I use for a 308 winchester load using this weight bullet.....I have load info on everything from 110 gr. to 220 gr,but cant find it for the 140 gr slug...........please help

tgugher62, you arent going to be able to use the 4831. It is far to slow for this application, especially with 140 grn bullets. What other powders to you have? I also need to know the legth of your bullet, base to tip. Give me the average of ten bullet measurements. The OAL of a loaded round, barrel length. I will give you a good starting load and powder recomendation.

First off IMR 4831 is WAAAAY too slow a burning powder to use in a 308 Win. I have 8 different loading manuals and none of them list any loads for any bullet for the 308 Win. and IMR 4831. Are you sure that you do not have IMR 4895 powder? Second, I have never personally seen a 140 gr 30 cal. military bullet. Check your weight on the bullet. Most are 147/48 grs. You can use load data for a 150 gr bullet for bullets 140 to 150 grs. If you do have IMR 4831 powder do not try to use it in a gas operated semi-auto because the port pressure will be way off and it can cause harm to the rifle. It most likely will not function the action either.
