IMR 4350 or H4350 or just wait for IMR 4451?

Right now I have lots of loads worked up for IMR 4350 but there is lots of H4350 in my new gunshops here in PA. Is H4350 better? Should I switch? I would like a powder that's cleaner burn. And a little more temp stable. Or should I just wait for the new IMR 4451

IMR 4350 and H4350 are not "better" one over the other. They are different. IMR has kernels that are longer, so load density is not as great. H4350 is just ever so slightly slower. Both are clean burning, and have the same applications. But they are not the same.. Both are excellent.

I use it for two. 54r and 30-06

I have not really ever thought of IMR as a dirty powder till I tried some Winchester748 in a 308 and for a load in my 54r. Then I was like wow this stuff is so much cleaner then IMR products that I had always used. Not dissing IMR. But its an old powder. Surly the new stuff is better right?

IMO, you shouldn't "switch". I'm at the point where I try to work up a load for my rifles using a range of powders - some admittedly better than others but all of which shoot well enough in a pinch - and set one up as my "go to" powder when it's available. Following that process takes a lot of frustration out of my shooting experiences.

It's nice to have more than one or two powders to use in these days of spotty availability. If you can find a couple of alternate powders I'd certainly use them.

Honestly, I don't know which IMR powders you were using, nor if you were in the "pressure range" that makes them clean burning. BUT I can tell you that IMR 4895, 8208XBR, 4320, 4350, 4831 and 7828 are some of the cleanest burning powders around.. Hodgdon 4350, 4831 and 1000 are extremely clean burning, but do not think the aforementioned IMR powders are dirty. As far as "old" compared to "new", they have "won" the "test of time" because they continue to work and work very well indeed..

I have not seen a chart yet, but when I spoke to the techs at Hodgdon a month ago they said that,
IMR 4166 is between IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 in burn rate,
IMR 4451 is between IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 in burn rate,
IMR 7977 is slower than IMR 7828.
Hope this helps.

A powder that's just a hair slower then 4350 would be ideal for me. I usualy use longer barrels anyway and can burn a slower powder. Thanks.

IMR and H 4350 are made by different companies on different continents. Not interchangeable in any real sense. They share some common data - not all. As Shootsdots said. They aren't the same powder.
I like the H better for any commonalities that may occur.

I'd like to have on hand about ten 8 pounders of H4350...if I could find them!!

Agreed. Throw in 80 lbs of Varget, 8208, 150 lbs of Swiss 1.5F, and I'll sleep well.....

Oak Ridge. Late Sunday afternoon 11-09-14. Sunny. Twitchy 0-4 mph wind. Low 60's. 600 yards from bench. Did not hold outside x ring to compensate for wind.

30-06.

32" Bartlein cut with Manson reamer. Barnard action. Ten times fired Lapua Brass (pockets still tight). Tula primers. 215 Berger hybrids .012 into lands.

15 shots H4350 followed by 5 shots with IMR4350. 53 grains for both.

H4350...2 sighters, then one 9, 2 tens, 10 x's.

IMR4350...one 10, 4 x's.

This was the first time I had tried the IMR. For same volume out of my powder dispenser as the Hodgdon, it weighed about 3 grains less, thus filled the case more to bring it up to 53 grains.

I trashed the brass that shot the 9.

When I finally get a rifle to be accurate with whatever powder, I leave it alone. Just because there is a new powder doesn't mean it will be any better. But that's me, if you like to tinker, have at it. Barlow

I picked up 8lb of 4451.

6mm Remington 90 Ballistic Tips. Used the same load as 4350. Did not chronograph yet, but shot sub .5 MOA
