IMR 4166 and shooting Hornady 125gr 30 caliber - HELP

I have Hornady 125 grain 30 caliber bullets and IMR 4166 powder. I want to load and shoot in my TC Contender with a 30-30 Winchester barrel.

I don't have a loading manual that lists IMR 4166 for any 30 caliber bullets... I guess that I just have "old" manuals.. My 8lb. container of 4166 indicates it is good for 30-30....

Can someone here help?

Is the 30TC designed to withstand the same chamber pressure as a 30-30 WIN?

Drop about 15 percent from the Varget load for starters - but watch carefully for pressure. As It's a double based powder, It pressure spikes fairly quickly and there is no point continuing when the first signs of pressure appear. I have good results from a 6BR and only unhappiness with the 308, with pressure signs appearing at lower velocities than I expected. I'm sure that you know that 4166 has been discontinued...but we do have to use up what we have. I got best accuracy with the BR at 28.5g and 3 thou neck tension, with 105g Sierra's

30 TC data is NOT interchangeable with 30-30 data. Two completely different animals. For one, TC runs much higher pressure than the 120+ year old 30-30 cartridge.

4166 is a bit on the slow burning side for 30-30. Best bet is the common light bullet 223 powders such as 322, 335, 748, 2015, 3031, etc.

My favorite is H322.

I just found a burn rate chart that listed IMR 4166 as (#100) and IMR 4064 as (#101). Can't I just substitute the data for IMR 4064??

The below info is for the 140 gr on the Hodgdon site. They are EXACTLY the same in the 30-30

If I wanted to shoot 4166, I would start about 34 grains and work up.
Just my 2 cents

125 gr are a hair to light for the 3030 with imr-4166... I can only help you with Quickload program generated data... PM Incoming...
There are TWO different 125 gr Hornady 30 cal bullets,.. The HP # 30192, and the SST # 3019. I'll send you data for both. Just Remember the SST is a longer bullet than the HP so it reaches max pressures sooner.

Besides the Private message I'm about to send here is data from Sierra and their 125 gr because IMR-4064 is extremely close to IMR-4166...

NO! It doesn't work that way.

Ref the Hodgdon site data: that is a big jump in powder for a 10 grains difference in bullet weight!
