imr 4064 in .223 ar

has anybody used imr 4064 in an ar. i tried some in my 20in. rock river and it shot one of the best group i have ever got. i put a 50 v-maxbt over 25.0 in some wwc 01 cases which gave me a 3000fps velocity. 25.8 fills the case without a drop tube. i have only had this kind of accuracy from varget.

I prefer the Varget because I can dump it. Same can be said for TAC and 748. I get frustrated with 4064's long kernels.

Metering is not it's strong point. I trickle varget too so it does not matter to me. I only dump 748, TAC, DT2200 or other ball powders.

I've always liked IMR-4064 in spite of the fact it won't throw worth a darn. A lot of times it shoots so well it doesn't matter if the charge weights vary some. What I don't understand is why IMR hasn't marketed a short cut version of this powder to shut it's detractors up. I for one would buy more of it.

I agree 4064 has always been one of my favorite powders for velocity and accuracy. But you have to get used to cutting kernels and using a trickler to take advantage of of it. If there was a short kernel version I would use it a lot. I'm like you other guys in the fact I like to 'load em and send em down range'. But seriously it is a good powder!

i actually picked it for my howa m-1500 in .243 for use with some lighter bullets and just tried it in my ar. i put 25.8gr under a 69mk in the wwc01 cases and could push them 3100fps.the load is a little hot but does not seem to be any more so than my factory federal xm193 loads. i will back them down a bit though.i believe my sieera book says max for ar is 25.7
