IMR 4064 .308

Is anyone using IMR 4064 for competition? Wondering if anyone is using it and if your having any temp sensitive problems. I have a ton of it and i also have Varget but figured i would use up the 4064. I will be shooting 185 Juggs in Lapua .308 Palma Brass.

I used 4064 when Varget was even harder to come by. Worked great with 155s and the occasional 185s. Needed to clean a bit more often but excellent accuracy. I found it had a wide pressure range. With 46.3 gr. in Lapua Palma cases I had a 155 gr. load that was accurate from 2970 fps at about 60º to 3015 at 85º with no pressure issues from a 32" barrel

Your charge weights will be close to what you'd have with Varget. 4064 will give you better case fill (bulkier) and a little more speed grain for grain.

In a 308 case fill isnt an issue. You will need a long drop tube to get enough 4064 in the case. Load will be almost identical to varget

I shot 4064 for 2 years in my 308 with 175 smk and 185 juggernauts. The only thing I saw with temp was point of impact shift. My groups pretty much stayed the same just dropped low as it got cold. I shot 1000 yard benchrest so it was just a turn of the knob for corrections. No big deal. This was my favorite powder for 308.

I have used IMR-4064 for nearly 20 years in my .308 with 175SMK's, and 168SMK's in my .30-'06. It's about the only propellant I've ever been able to match FGMM accuracy with.

.308, 175SMK, 42.2gr IMR-4064 and a match primer. This was for the M1A, but worked quite well in bolt guns, too. The load (not mine) was reputed to be supersonic at 1Kyd in the M1A.

.30-'06, 168SMK, 48.1gr IMR-4064 (this is suitable for my Garand as well as my M70 sporter.). For deer, I substitute the 165SGK. Accuracy is the same, very slight shift in POI. Sub MOA at 250yd in the Winchester.

42.0 , I4064 with a 175 SMK is my current match load. like you, I'm trying to burn off a large stock of 4064, and I have nothing to complain about.

I have a new Savage 308" w/ a 20" barrel I'm using for hunting. I choose IMR 4064 with Hornady 165gr SST, CCI 200's and Lapua brass. I'm preparing to do a ladder test using this combo. What are your thoughts?

It will work just fine. Should make a good deer combination.

Thanks Jarhead and Josh. In some of my brass (like EDGE 308), I get flattened primer and primer leakage with only 41.4gr IMR 4064 and a 168SMK! I can't use more than 43gr in ANY of my brass (FC GMM, Lapua, LC Match, IMI Match). If I went up to 45gr+ like the Hodgdon/IMR load book says is max, I'd blow up my gun.

Guys, last night I started loading my virgin Lapua brass. I was only able to get 42.5gr of 4064 in the case up to the body/shoulder junction and the base of my 165gr SST's were just about touching that [bullets seated 2.855", .020" jump]. Hodgdon's data says this is a starting load and when I tried to put in the max it was filled up in the neck. How long of a drop tube do I need? Or do I need to fireform my brass first and then neck size only?

Just finished my testing with 185 Juggernaut and 4064 and Varget. Starting load with 4064 was 42.5 and ending load was 43.8. The gun loved the 43.2 grains 4064 (I will post picture later) 5 shot group with awesome elevation and almost a ragged hole. The FPS I was getting from 43.2 was 2725 with an SD of 6 in Lapua brass behind a BR-2 Primer. No pressure signs what so ever. This seems to be the low end im hoping to get to the next node which should be around 2800fps. But this wont happen with 4064 as the case is on the verge of compressed with 43.8. I think I heard some crunching at 43.5 grains.

For VARGET I should similar results as the 4064 which I expected. I was able to end with 44 grains of varget and still had plenty of room in the case. 44 Grains of VARGET Shot awesome too. 5 shots with a ragged hole similar to the 4064, but i gained more velocity at 2754 with also an SD of 6 .

I figured I would use my varget for big matches and warmer days since the 4064 can be a little more temp sensitive, but it shoots just as well.

30" HV 4 Groove
Defiance Action (Deviant)

I'm using LC 13 with 40.5gr. works great, but is temp sensitive.

No prob, just work up on a warm day and check accuracy on a cold one.
