IMR 4007

I have some freinds who are shooting it in a 22-250 and LOVE it. outstanding accuracy and very consistant velocity. Any one else using it?

kgpcr, I have tried it in my 22-250 and one of my .308s and it is a jam up powder. I only bought a pd. at the last gun show but if I had known it were going to be as good as it is I would have bought the 8 pd. jug. Bill

Yes Sir. I think I can help. According to the Hodgdon Load Data Center on their web-site, you should start at 34.0 gr. and the "MAX" load would be 38.0 gr. I normally will load,.010 into the lands) 10 bullets in .3 gr. increments backwards from the Max which is 38.0 and see if I get a cluster anywhere. If so, I tend to take the mid to highest charge in that cluster and work with .1 gr. increments on both sides of that charge. Then I play with seating depth if I'm not happy with the group. I guess you could say that this is some sort of ladder test but don't be surprised if you have lower charges printing higher on your target than the next couple or so up the "ladder". Also, you may try the same test on two different days and get two different results. Temp, humidity, air density, wind all have to be accounted for. Another explanation offered by a long time shooter
is each charge of powder sets up a different Harmonic "barrel whip" which results in impact changes. I have no proof either way but I have been able to pick a load from this procedure and shoot 5 shot groups in the .300s and .400s at 200 yds. consistantly with my 22-250 LRPV. Maybe some of the more educated and experienced BR shooters will chime in on this and shed more light and/or maybe agree or disagree and tell us why. I hope this helps. Bill

You have a Savage?? you shoot that junk LOL. I just bought a Savage 12FLV in 22-250. I think Savage is the best gun going right now!

Well, I've always been a Rem. man and I still own some Remingtons but I bought one of the Savage F/class Target rifles and I really got hooked on that action and trigger. That was what got me going with Savage and I bought the LRPV a little while ago. I am very pleased with it. Bill

I love the accutriger! I cant wait to get it to the range. i have freinds who love thier Savages i too have a remmingtons.

For those who are curious, IMR 4007 ssc is relatively new. It is "a Super Short granulated powder with a burn speed that falls between 4320 and 4350. Ideally suited for varmint cartridges like the 220 Swift, 22-250 Remington and 243 Winchester. Additionally, well suited for the venerable 30-06, the 300 Winchester Short Magnum, and the Super Short Magnums 243 and 25 Winchester."

I know a couple guys who have been trying it in a 6-6.5x47 and so far they are impressed. The new Hodgdon Hybrid 100V is another powder to consider in this burn range.

Moderator, Do you know of any start load data for the 6 - 6.5 X 47 with 4007 or the Hodgdon powder? Thanks, Bill

I have tried 4007 in my .308 and it is working well also.

I tried this powder for giggles in my 7 SAUM with some 145 gr bullets. The one thing that was very consistent about this powder is fouling and smoke. It has been one of the dirtiest powders I have used. It is close to 2400/240 SWC in a 44 mag pistol and Bullseye/158 SWC in a 38. It did give me some of the best groups, but I do not remember if IMR 4007 or Norma URP ended up being the best for me.

FWIW, both powders gave upwards of 100 more fps than H4350 or AA4350 did in my rifle with the same conditions; did I also mention that the groups were 40-50 percent better too? How important is some extra soot in the barrel to you?

I really did not notice any difference in my rifles as far as it being dirty. Maybe I should pay more attention next time out with it. Bill

I am in S E N C and so far the temps that I have exposed this powder to has only been between 45 and 65 degrees. So far I have not noticed any difference. As you might be thinking, we don't have much winter weather here man. Bill

I have not shot much IMR4007 but i did not find it dirty at all! I will post again after i have shot it more but so far i could not be happier!

I shot 10 bullets loaded with IMR 4007ssc from my 6 X 47 Shehane on Sat. I tried 2 other powders and cleaned after each 10 shot string with the 3 powders. I did not see any difference between the 3 when the first patch was pushed thru the bore. However, in this rifle H-4350 and VV-N160 beat IMR-4007ssc in the accuracy dept. by a fair margin. But, it is working very well in my 22-250
and 308. Bill

I've been playing with heavier bullets,JLK 108 & Berger 115 VLD)in a 250 AI recently. The rifle is a trued SA 700 with a 26" Krieger 10-twist in #5 sporter contour, Jewell HVR, custom sloped scope rail, and a Bushnell 6500 Elite 2.5-16x42 in Leupold PRW rings, all in a B&C Medalist stock.

I'd bought an 8lb. jug of 4007SSC not long after it first came out, hoping to use it in a 6 HAGAR upper, but it's way slow for that little cartridge, even in a 28" bbl. Seems a little fast with 115s in the 6x47L, so I'm hoping to find a niche for it in the 250 AI. No chrono data, as it was too late in the day when I finally made it to the range, but 38.5grs of 4007 with F210 & a moly'd B115VLD jammed .015" gave easy bolt lift, and five shots went into .7". I'll chrono the remaining five rounds before making the decision to bump the charge.

Also had 41grs. of H100V loaded with the same bullets & primers as above, but bolt lift was pretty stiff, so I fired only three rounds. I'll back it off a full grain before testing again. The kicker was that two of the three shots went through the same hole; hopefully, that wasn't a fluke, and H100V will perform just as well at lower pressure.

This 250 AI is somewhat of a paradox - Varget pushes JLK 108s 3000+fps w/o signs of excess pressure, while N160, RL17, & RL15 all topped out well under 3000fps. Definitely need to get the chrono out when I go back to try H100V & 4007 again.
