IMR 4007 SSC?

I had worked up some loads for my 22-250AI with 69 SMK and IMR 4007 SSC that worked outstanding +10 years ago. Still have 3/4 of lb bottle. I was looking and didn't see it listed with any vendor (not that anyone would have any in stock) and it wasn't on IMR website. When was this powder discontinued? I thought is was a newer powder back then. Did it get renamed or just eliminated? Anyone have an suggestions for closest burn rate rate? I really liked the way the SSC metered...

Pretty sure it was discontinued. Also think there was a pretty big recall. Don’t think the two were related

I just read about all lots being recalled and possibility for spontaneous combustion. Well that is a bummer. Going to think hard before I add water to make fertilizer out of my stock. I will pull it away from the other +30 lbs of powder in that cabinet.... just in case. Tim

Initially only 1 lot was recalled as I remember. Later, all lots were recalled and replaced with your choice of IMR powder. There was a problem with spontaneous combustion. Think this was the cause of the powder being discontinued, about the same time as the 1st recall. I had a great load worked up with it and had to dump about 7 lb. It was somewhere around 4064, but metered much better as you noted. Think you can still get a replacement pound for the sticker off your bottle by going to Hodgdon's website.

If I remember correctly only certain lots were recalled. I remember looking through mine to see if I had any of the recalled lots but did not. I believe I still have some left. Probly oughta look into getting it replaced.

IMR 4007SSC was a fabulous powder. They had a BIG recall, for whatever reason I do not know. Having said that, it was a shade faster burning than H4350 and very accurate in most cartridges in it's burn rate range. The closest thing I can see in that same burn rate range is VV N550. N550, however, is a "double based" powder, which means it contains nitro. But if your cartridge worked great with IMR 4007SSC, then I would give N550 a real run. It should shoot every bit as well and give you a velocity boost to boot. Main drawback is it is one of the hottest powders out there and will eat up throats like candy. I do not know if VV made the "temp stability" change yet to N550, so I can not attest to any temp stability like N555 or N565.

When I opened my one container (never used, seal never broken) of 4007SSC last year to dispose of it, it was a fun reddish brown, and smelled awful (I.E. it was breaking down and releasing nitric acid and nitrogen dioxide).

14 months ago I called them, they gave me the option of replacement or $$. I took the replacement option and received my replacement powder 7 months later. In today's climate I'd take the cash. JMHO. WD

They stopped giving out a replacement powder in 2019 I was told. Once you send back a signed release form, they will send you a check for $35 for each pound you had.

When I turned mine in the sent me a check instead of powder that was about a year ago, if I remember correctly they had stopped shipping replacement powder. And yes they recalled it all. Hope this helps.

I liked it for my 6.5 CM loads. I thought the initial recall didn't include my lot numbers... didn't know they recalled it all.

This past year I went to check on some loads I made years earlier and this is what I found...





I was able to pull the bullets but the brass was brittle. Some of the necks pull off with the bullets. I lost about 300 pieces of 6.5CM brass and had to toss about 200 rounds of .308 Win as well.

Old thread - update. After being out of shooting/reloading for 7-8 years. I was putting together my 22-250AI for my son to use for ground hogs in 2021. My load was worked up using IMR4007SSC in 2008 or so. I couldn't find any more powder in stock and started this thread, in which I learned about its recall. I had set the can of powder outside my shop between some rocks with intensions of pouring in out. Forgot about it. I was getting a rock out of the pile today and I saw this black melted pile of plastic. After some head scratching - I finally figured out is was the can of IMR4007SSC I had set outside 3 years ago. Not sure when but at some point it ignited. Got hot enough to melt most of the metal lid. It had been stored in the same metal cabinet with over 30lbs of other powder for over 10 years. I know - no explosion without pressure, but it could have burned my shop down.

I guess I will pay better attention to recall notices in the future... Tim

It was my favorite powder in my 17 Remington with 30grn bullets. Super accurate and around 3700fps. Looking at VV N135 as a replacement in my 17Rem.
