Improved 7 SAUM

No, but I had thought about a 300 SAUM-AI (almost looks like SUNAMI). 300 SAUM 40 degree shoulders. If good 300 WSM brass gets hard to find again, I may go this route. And, Norma 300 SAUM brass is about $0.50 a piece cheaper than Norma 300 WSM brass. S. Hall

I have a friend of mine who does. He runs 180 Hybrids at a "comfortable" 2980. He does it with LOWER pressures than with a "non-improved" SAUM. AND I have seen it shoot>>>T-Rust me, his shoots extremely well! His carries a 40 degree shoulder and he shoots H4350. The exact charge weight I do not know. However, I do know it is in the upper 50grs. area, somewhere in the 57.0 grain area..

Right now I’m shooting a 284 and a 300 wsm, I’m thinking of getting a SAUM spun up. I like the 35* case to prevent case growth and I believe that 35* tend to be more accurate. Plus, improving it may give me a bit more capacity

I have a 7 RSAUM and I sure wish I went with a 35* or 40* shoulder. Mine gives me fits with all the case growth. The brass flows so bad on my Norma cases that my case necks need to be trimmed and turned down quite often. The neck/shoulder junction gets thick in a hurry. Gave me terrible vertical troubles until it was diagnosed.

Alex,

You are right. I have his original 7rsaum improved rifle. He went to the dark side with a 300 WSM. I had 2 barrels cut with a PT reamer to his specs. Shoots great. I'll try to find one of the first 5 shot groups I shot. Got it! Most will not believe it, but true. The first 2 barrels were 32" with a taper to 1". Had trouble with stringing after 15 + rounds at my pace;). Have a 32" 1.25 straight throated for the 190s. Never fully tested. Keep going back to the 284

Why not try out a 280 AI. There are several options for brass and it can run the 180’s at 2900fps-3000fps. Mine was comfortable at about 2990fps.

The 7 RSAUM, is a pretty good cartridge but, I believe the 7 mm-.270 WSM will be the next 1,000 yard, record holder !
The Canadians and Brit's are working heavily, with this round and 180 Berger Hybrids.
I can't believe one of, the Brass or, Ammo makers, hasn't put a "wizz-bang", New name on this, FINE round.
Practically, no taper to case body, 35* shoulder, nice long Neck length, strong, thick brass, 7 mm high BC bullet, good Powder capacity,.. what's NOT to like !

Only think I don’t like about it is the barrel life. Numerous reports of barrel life in the 800-1200 round area. I’d be all over them if I could closer to 2K

Barrel life

Doesn’t the SAUM have about the same Barrel life as 7-270?
I wish it did, but no, the small extra amount of powder really does seem to have an effect on barrel life. I would be extremely happy if my 7mm/270s i used to run could have lasted 1200 rounds. (or even 800 rounds of accurate life)

The 35* Improved, 7mm SAUM, looks like a "Winner" and judging by the Group at 1,000 yds above, it should be,.. "exploited",.. further !
Has anyone tried H1000, in the 7-.270 WSM,.. yet ?

I had a bunch of "spare parts" laying around so I took a Bartlien barrel and ran a 7WSM reamer in .177" short and set headspace with a RSAUM gauge. I pushed the neck and throat out to fit the RSAUM case and fireformed it. I shortened some RCBS dies to size/load the cases. I am working with naked 168 Bergers and Retumbo at the moment. I have 3 loads on the original 50 Norma cases I had and still have nice tight primer pockets. Running right at 3000 with no pressure and accuracy is really good. This will be my LR hunting rifle when I get a heavy sporter barrel ready to roll. I am sure that there are a lot of people who do not think the gains are worth the work but it is what I had so I made it work.

Funny thing is I have 2 SAUMs and found the same thing with Nosler brass. On my short action, I run Remington brass and rarely have to trim. I'm just starting to try the 300 saum brass necked down for the long action.. So far, so good. I wish there was an alternative. A buddy of mine runs a 35* and hasn't had issues. His is a hammer!

Have any of you tried Bertram 7 SAUM brass? I have some 6.5 SAUM ordered but don't have it yet.
