Importing a tactical operations rifle form the states to Australia

Just wondering which is a solid model tac ops rifle. I want a 308. What is the process to import it from the US?

Thanks in advance any help is appriciated

Contact GA Precision http://www.gaprecision.net/ they are a top notch rifle and I'm sure will know the ins and outs of getting one to you.
If you go with the standard Crusader or Hospitaller the wait will be much shorter since they have them in thier rotation all the time.

I looked into importing a custom action from the states about 12 months ago. The hardest part is getting it past the US dept of homeland security. You'll need an export licence from them first and that will cost you about $300 USD (I think). They're only good for 6 months so you will need to make sure you're rifle is ready to ship when you apply.
You will also need to have some paperwork from your states firearm registry so that it will clear customs when it hits our shores. Then you will have to arrange a courier from the customs clearing house to a firearms dealer that will be happy do the transfer for you. Finally just be sure that all accessories with the rifle such as extra magazines are described on all the paperwork. Its best to get all extra stuff with the rifle because if you order it as an afterthought, then you will need another $300 USD export license.
If it all sounds a bit risky, there are a couple of gunsmiths that import barrels and actions from the states. Might be worth checking out PSECO and Pro Cal trading.

I have imported a rifle and shotgun from the U.S. into Canada and the experience might give you some insight.

Went from Ontario to a New York State gun shop. Paid for the gun up front including N.Y. State sales tax. Then the gun shop applied for an Export permit from the U.S. State Dept. The permit is free from the State Dept. but the gun shop charged $100 for handling the paperwork.

Went back home and phoned the RCMP to register a firearm in the process of importation. Got a registration certificate and an Import permit from the Canadian government(free).

When all of the paperwork had been received went back to the U.S. gun shop and showed the Canadian registration cert. The shop drove the gun to the border and into Canada Customs where the paperwork was inspected. Paid Canadian sales tax and drove the gun home.

Hope this helps in understanding the process. Might be more complicated for a gun to leave the North American continent.

Scott Vickery from Thornton Hunting and Outdoors, has been having a lot to do with tactical type stuff from USA lately, he might be someone to talk to. PM me for his contact details.

The Tac-ops Tango 51 is a great rifle that usually has a 20" tube and they do a great job from what I've read on Sniper central, 1/4" accuracy is their guarantee with with all models!
They make models with longer barrels for more velocity if needed.
I'm not putting down the GA precision though, they have a great reputation as well!!

If i was in the market for a rifle, I would call Kelbly they can build anything you want. They ship all over the world..........jim

I had a look at the kelby website they are very impressive rifles. By "ship all over the world' do you mean i just have to get a dealer to import one direct from them? If this was the case they would charge a fee wouldn't they? Its not a problem im just trying to work out the exact process.

Thanks,

Tom

It will cost at least $300, plus, I believe, a percentage of the value of the rifle.

The recipient will have to fill out a State Department form, DSP-83, as will his local authorities.

The exporter also submits another State Department form, DSP-5.

Obviously, if it is a very expensive rifle, this, as a percentage of the cost of the rifle, is smaller.

Why, when the US is suffering a monumental balance of payments deficit, they want to discourage exports is beyond me.

Mate I reckon you will have more trouble than what it's worth. Look up shane Clancy gunsmithing he has made some insane custom tactical rifles with all the fruit.
