new rifle barrel life

Hi, I am going to get a custom rifle made soon for f class or f open in australia.
I was wondering if any one could help me with the approximate barrel life of se c eral cartridges I am considering.

260 remington/260 rem imp 30 degrees
I would most likely opt for 130 grain pills so I dont have to push so hard. Maybe 140 grains

284 winchester.

308

I am getting a bernard p action wirh custom stock, because of the rules regarding weight in f std and f open in australia I am reluctant to get a 308 barrel. The weight for a 308 in f std is 8 kg inc scope and bipod and for f open it is 10 kg. I dont know if having the extra weight in f open will matter much. The rifle will come with 2 barrels I am just unsure of what to get depending on barrel life, I will definately be getting a 260 or 260 imp. Thanks in advance for your answers on barrel life, some of the guides were rather vague on the subject.

It all depends on how hard and fast you push your bullets. When I was younger and dumber, I burnt out a 264 win mag barrel in 970 rounds. Of course, I was pushing 130 grain rounds at 3300 fps, shot 90+ loads at every sitting, and went through a sitting in less than 2 hours, so I both overheated the barrel, but also burnt the throat out of it.

My current 308 has over 1700 rounds through it, and I still get great grouping. I have heard of others getting close to 3500 rounds without issue from a 308 barrel.

I am currently building a 6.5x47, and from the gunsmith's I have spoken with, I expect around 4000 based on the 120-130 grain bullets I plan to use, and speeds around 2700 FPS range. I had a 260 remington, but not a AI, and I got 1400 through it before I sold it (factory barrel). I do have a 280 AI, but it is my hunting gun, and have approximately 450 rounds through it and could not be happier with it.

I know a guy with a 6x47, but I am not sure about the round count. He said it is a real laser of a round and he typically shoots 600 yards+.

I would be very surprised if you got anything less than 3,000 rounds from any of the above. As for the 284 - all I know is the local smith rebarreled a 6.5x284 (same parent case, 6.5 bullet as opposed to 7mm), and he told me the owner only got 2100 rounds before it was toasted. He showed a few pictures from a borescope and it was cracked and in pretty rough shape. Not sure of the loads, powder, time between shots, ect, but, so I withhold judgement.

Almost everyone is shooting some form of 7mm in Aus now. Apart from me and pretty much everyone else in WA but thats a work in progress in the next few months. I have a 260 30 deg imp and its performing very well. Throat erosion has been 4 thou over about 450 shots. Quite happy with that. Loading 43.7gr 2209 and 140 bergers. If you want one cal to play with for a while that would be it. But if your going to get 2 barrels I would look at a 6.5x47L and 130's and a 284W with 180's. Or a 6BR and 105's and 284W and 180's. Take a look at the ozfclass site you will get alot of info there.

It depends on the action and whether you plan to use a mag, but most short actions will not handle a 284 win. You may be able to fire it single shot, and again I don't know if you use magazines, but I know a 284 will not fit in a short action mag here in the US.

If you are going 260 for sure, I would consider the 6mm br. Brass life can be measured in dozens of reloads, great light shooting gun for 500 yards, and only uses around 33 grains of powder. It will fit in most mags, but may require modifications to the feed lips.

You will have no problem with 284 in the barnard. You will have no problem with any round that has a 308 boltface as f class is single load.

The 284, 6.5x47 and 260 imp should all be good for 2000 rounds of accurate life, maybe a bit more with the 6BR, depending on how hard you push it.
The 6x47 though is more of a barrel burner, lasting around 1200 or so shots.

The 308 shooting medium loads with 155gn bullets with single base powders should last at least 4000 rounds, but if you are intending to go between F Open and F std, you will have to increase the trigger pull weight to make rules in F std.

The 260 is a great choice and for 7mm ,,,the 284 or 280 AI are both great choices,,,,I shoot a 280 AI and it is one of the most forgiving and e-z to tune cals I hav evr had,,,,Roger
