im new to site and need input

First i would like to say thank you, i have received many hrs. of enjoyment from this website.
So here is the question..i am very interested in f- class open. I want to get involved, help out and eventually start shooting after i learn the ropes.
I am on a limited shooting budget, i have a ruger #1v chambered in 223 rem. It will shoot 1" groups at 200yrds. All day if i do my part. I love the rifle. Although ive thought of getting a new barrel chambered in 6mm br. For f-class shooting, also i have a 25-06 that has some custom work already yet still has factory barrel; i could get a new custom barrel in 25-06 to shoot or should i save up for a new rifle? Right now my money jar is designated for a nightforce scope. Then a new rifle..any suggestion / guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks you

Welcome! You have found the best shooting forum there is! Very knowledgeable people here and friendly as well.

I've been shooting F-Class for a few years and really like it. What I would suggest is this. Do as much reading on the subject as you can. Then go and shoot. Nothing will teach you more than participation. I don't think either of your rifles would be my first pick for F-Class shooting, but they are certainly plenty good to get started. Since your budget is limited as are most folks, I wouldn't consider buying anything until you try shooting with what you have.

Suggest that you try Mid-Range first. See what the other shooters are using and see how your interest evolves. I started out thinking I would shoot F/TR and soon found that I liked F-Open more.

I can personally recommend the Alliance Rifle club in Malvern Ohio. Not too far from you. Fantastic range and a good bunch of guys that shoot both Mid-Range and Long-range. I expect forum member NoahbodyImportant will reply as well. He is an officer at the club and very helpful.

Hi bobcat,

Glad to see that you are going to participate in ANY shooting sport. Now, more than ever, the sports need the participation and enthusiasm.

Your current rifle (Ruger No. 1) is a great rifle. I love mine too. The only issue that you will run into is ability to handle bullet weight for 600-1000 yard shooting. I don't know if you have a factory or aftermarket bbl on the rifle at the moment, but to get maximun enjoyment from your own good performance regarding a .223, a 7" or 8" twist barrel is pretty much a necessity for handling the heavier 77-82 grain bullets. The 90 grain bullet is another conversation.

If you are considering rebarreling that particular rifle in another cartridge, the 6mm BR that you mentioned is an excellent choice in a 7.5" or 8" twist. It is inherently accurate, produces excellent accuracy, and is pretty much the gold standard of the cartridges in that size.
