I'm excited about this barrel...

Just slipped on my new 32", 1.25" straight, Bartlein 5R, 1:9 twist barrel on the f-class rig after 1300 rounds on the current 284 shehane barrel, which is showing some major coppering and firecracking now. It is about time to turn the barrel into a fireforming barrel.

After a few rounds to "break-in" the barrel, I worked around my current load and it is showing some very good promise. Single shots to the center of the target with H4831SC, 180gr hybrids, 10K out at 100 yards yielded some nice vertical and POI between 56.5 and 56.9. A nice 0.4gr node it looks like. It also looks like the node is very noticeable. Yes, it is only a few shots, but for it to do this, I am stoked. Whatcha think?

These are one-shot to each target. I literally had 1 hour at the range to throw the first rounds down the barrel, clean it, throw a few more and when I saw the groups tighten, I had loaded up (1) round between 56.3-57.3 gr just to see what the POI and vertical dispersion was. I am spending the majority of the morning at the range tomorrow to see if I can nail a load down with good ES/SD right off the bat. Would be nice to not have to put a whole bunch of rounds down it looking for a load.

FYI, in the old barrel @ 56.8gr I got about 6-8 shots per piece of brass, but that was running a .220ish FB with the same 10K off the lands. It was at its best around 200-700 rounds and was running well against the F-Class shooters as Sac Valley. It started to copper up badly and with my cheapo endoscope thing, I can see firecracking bad right in the first 4-5 inches after the throat. I will be bringing the barrel to my smith to see what the inside looks like with a real borescope.

I suspect I will be around 56.6gr so that I am right in the lower-mid section of the node. I am also loaded way out there. OAL is about 3.2550". I am running a .235 freebore with this new reamer.

Ive seen 5 shot groups. More 3 shot groups, some even 2 shot groups but i gotta say i like shooting 1 shot groups.

C'mon dusty...you know 1-shot groups are the "in" now. ;)

I'll shoot some 3-shot groups just for you tomorrow ;D

Alright, here are 4-shot groups. Approximately 22 rounds down the barrel so far prior to testing.

56.3 - all were good trigger presses. Had a major flyer 3 o'clock. 3 shots
56.5 - had one flyer 3 o'clock due to bad shooting position. 4 shots
56.7 - had one flyer 6 o'clock sue to bad shooting position. 4 shots
56.9 - all good trigger presses. Don't know what the 6 o'clock shot was. 4 shots

Looks like I will work 56.6 grains. Next, I'll do a seating depth test to see if groups tighten up more than the 10K off as well as chronogaph to make sure ES/SD is good. I'll probably run 56.5, 56.6, and 56.7 gr for chrono after seating depth test to make sure ES/SD is where I want it to be.

Or perhaps work on honing your shooting position and "squeezing" the trigger instead of "pressing" it. ;D Just messin' ;)

What temperature is it when testing loads? I had great groups at 56.6, but the matches on 85+ deg. days made me go to 56.3.
