I'm disappointed! (Re Leupold)

For many years I relied upon Leupold scopes; used them I guess starting in the mid '50's or so and always had good luck with them. I've used two 5.5x22x56MM NF scopes the past couple of years with extremely great results! I put the zeros on for whatever distance I'm shooting for the prevailing conditions and the bullets go where intended. I've got an older Leupold 4.5x14x50MM Long Range scope I've had for a while now and recently I discovered that when I rotated the parallax knob with the rifle in a steady rest that the reticule would move downward a full 14" or so from 600 yards distance. I sent this scope back to Leupold for repairs about two months or so back and received it back about a week ago. I got a chance to check it out last date and Lo and Behold.....now I only have 10 clicks or 2.5 MOA right movement!! It's mounted on a 30/06 target rifle that I've had a NF on and I know that this rifle was fitted up correctly barrel-wise to action so there was no excessive amount of movement to get this rifle to zero however....when I rotate the windage knob for right POI movement.....the knob will turn BUT....the reticule DOES NOT MOVE!! On the work sheet sent back with the scope it advises that the erector lens was replaced and the scope checked for proper movement! Things must have changed drastically at Leupold these past few years because obtaining proper service, RELIABLE SERVICE was not an issue in the past!!

DO YOU THINK I'M PIZZED??

Re: I'm disappointed!

Good to know...just how good is a lifetime warranty if they don't deliver the goods? Anyway, they aren't making an F class suitable scope IMHO, so I will continue saving up for my (someday) NightForce, getting by with my Weaver T36 in the meantime.

I would call them back and ask to speak to a tech supervisor immediatly and describe your interface with their company.I will bet they make it right for you.

Thinking very strongly about sending it back to them with the message:

"Am sending this back to you to keep so you can have something to practice on! Maybe someone else will benefit in the future!"

I think a reasonable discussion with their tech reps and getting them another shot at it would be worthwhile. I have found their service to be excellent but screw ups sometimes do occur.

May I suggest you contact Jeff Davis (503-352-7640) and tell him your story? I've worked with him before and gotten very good results.

Sadly, I've had recent problems with the service dept. myself. Last year, I had them go through a 20 year old scope to correct a dirty (inside) lens. After several attempts, they got it clean, but the erector was bound up and didn't move properly. After some time working on it, they decided that the scope was beyond repair. They replaced it with a brand new scope for free.

That scope was on my F/TR rifle. After the first 40 rounds or so, I developed some serious rifle problems. I changed barrels, etc. but couldn't get my scores back up. When I happened upon an 8-32, magically, I could shoot some outstanding scores (and groups) again.

The scope is on my varmint rifle, and it just doesn't group (the rifle does - known commodity). I'll have to take it back over to them again. Between the grouping, and having to use up almost all of the left adjustment to get zeroed (that isn't an issue on these rifles with other scopes mounted?!?) it needs to be reworked.

I have loved Leupold scopes for a long time, but the performance of the service/custom shop has got me thinking that I don't need any more of them.
