"IF" you were to buy a 22 Hornet

"IF" you were to buy a 22 Hornet, what would you pick ? A Cooper 38 Jackson or a Anschutz 1730 D classic ? Or something else entirely ? I already have Ruger 77/22 VBZ, Browning Micro, and a CZ 527. Just want a higher end model...YES to shoot !!

Thanx for replies...

I have most of these, and will simply say that they are all great rifles, but if you want to handload for maximum performance (like I do) the Cooper would be my #1 choice. Or a Ruger #1, if you like those.

I have been looking for a Ruger # 1 B but haven't been able to locate one. I also reload for everything. Thinking abhout a Sako as well P75. Any thoughts ?

Just a case of one but I would stay away from the Annie 1730. I bought one, spent lots of doe on it and even more to make it shoot (re-crown, 2 bedding jobs) accurately. It did have a nice stock and fit and finish. I also hated the safety location on that rifle.

Now I have the Ruger 77/22 VHZ in Hornet and love it. I might suggest you get a custom barrel for your CZ or 77/22 and try a 17 or 20 cal wildcat. You can go over to Saubier and get lots of ideas.

Mike.

I've bought several CZs, from .17 HMR to .416 Rigby and have been more than satisfied with them. The 452 comes in both right hand and left hand versions, with a single set trigger.

As far as barrels go, I'd stay with the factory barrel since they've proven to be quite accurate. My .17 HMR is very accurate.

They do respond to a good bedding job, like just about any rifle with an actual walnut stock.

I have been wanting a hornet for a long time.. If I were to buy one today, I'd look at the CZ 527 FS, or the Browniong Micro..

I happen to own both a Cooper and an Anschutz . The Cooper definitely out performs the Anschutz hands down . The Anschutz with it's rear lugs , also has it's limits on hot loads . I love the looks of the Anschutz though , and I would never sell it . By the way if you can get your hands on RWS cases , they are super , compared to Winchester or Remington cases in the Hornet . Don't forget Ruger No.1's have that two piece stock problem , and a 5 lb trigger !

If I was to buy one on a budget, it would definately be the CZ 527. Those rifles are very accurate, and you can get them with some exceptional wood too. Not to mention, you can modify what most call an "ugly" magazine to make it look good.

I'd be buying a Sako if I was to buy one with a higher budget.

I have a Ruger #1 in .22 Hornet, if you're interested in buying, contact me. It has scope blocks installed on the barrel for a Unertl but I still have the original base.

A friend has a Savage, model 40 I believe, that he says is exceptionally accurate.

Agreed, my model 40 amazed me with its accuracy! My std load is 11.5 gr of H110 with a 35 gr V-max. My best group out of my 77/22H was in the .4" range. The 1st time out the Savage cut that in half! I'm going to play with it a little more when the snow melts...

Another one to consider but has not been mentioned is the Browning 1885 Low Wall. These were chambered in 22 Hornet, 223, and 243W I believe, and can still be found. I had mine immediately rechambered to 22 K-Hornet, and have not regretted it one iota.

Great little walking about rifle for rock chucks, the extra fps doesn't hurt, and as a "K", very easy on brass.
