If you wanted to improve your wind reading....

I have spent 2 years shooting 22 benchrest ARA before my first first FTR Mid Range match. That and trigger control helped me a lot. My personal experience. A lot of good suggestions here. A lot of trigger time at the range. I would wait for the windy days no one wants to shoot in and that is the time to go.

The biggest thing that helped me(and I am in no way a wind caller) was shooting in the Presidents 100 Shoot off. The format of command fire where you could have several minutes between shots gave me time to really pay attention to the conditions. I couldnt run a string of 20 in 7 minutes like I normally do. The first year I shot it I was not ready for that reality. I dropped 12 points in 10 shots because I wasnt paying attention.

This past year I made it again with a much better outcome. I only dropped 1 point.

So Russell, when are you coming down so I can call wind while you're shooting?

Remember wind in the first third of target range has a greater effect on target than wind in the last third.

Wind above the line of sight can be faster that in the line if sight. It varies with terrain. Trajectory high point is about 55% to 60% of target range.

Coach a good shooter. Your learning curve will half of what it would be otherwise.
Calling the wind while a good shooter shoots shot after shot...Cant beat that feed back.

This is the best way to learn the wind. You can focus on nothing but the wind. You tell them where to hold and watch the result through your spotter. Excellent exercise.

Had to laugh at the very first response, Thanks Mr. Obvious:D. I"m a wind rookie myself, so I don't have much to add, just wanted to ask if Emil Praslick has ever written a book on the wind? I've always heard he was a genius in the wind!

Perfect illustration of what was discussed correctly and incorrectly earlier.

The late wind actually pushes the bullet farther as it should because the bullet is relatively going a lot slower. About 16" compared to 9" for the early wind.

The early wind pushes the bullet onto a new path and it has much more effect at target because when the wind stops pushing it it keeps going in a straight line but at an angle to the target for another 667 yards! About 9" of true wind effect and about 35" of angle effect.

I always do wind reading when I am score keeping. You need to be familiar with the shooters sights so you can watch him adjust for your wind calls. A good shooter is fun and a novice sometimes messes things up.

Then there is the shooter who favors......................
