If you had to choose brass tonight, which brand?

So I am about to drop some money on brass. I asked one of the prominent members on the forum that I trust about Lapua or Peterson brass. Said I will not go wrong either way. So here is my quandary. If you had to choose
6.5cm brass

1. Lapua outstanding reputation and quality. Very consistent. Small rifle primer (longer lasting pockets)

2. Peterson fat neck brass. Uses large rifle primers, (pockets may not last as long). Wanted to turn down necks for trial and experimenting because I’m newer to this.

My neck chamber is .296 I believe. The fat neck brass is about .016 neck wall which makes the total loaded with bullet .296 which means I can turn down .001 or .002. and play with having a tighter chamber. I do realize that loose chambers are accurate as well.

It’s a toss up I guess small rifle primer with smaller flash hole for large, and having a tight neck or not. But I do wonder how a thick neck wall translates to pressure and tension issues. I really would love to hear all different opinions. This is still very much a learning process for me and enjoy listening to you all

Thanks!

I talked to Ben?? At Peterson. He said the fat neck which is .016 neck wall only available in large. It was a mistake, don’t really know what he meant by that. But the fat neck will never be available in srp

I am currently running Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass. I am starting on my 10th cycle with this brass and it is still as new as far as the primer pockets are concerned. I have pushed this brass hard in my experiments with this cartridge in both 24" and 30" barrels. The case heads on this brass will withstand extreme pressure without giving much if any of the common signs of excessive pressure. I have achieved some truly impressive velocities out of the 30" barrel running RL-26 with outstanding extreme spread numbers on the chronograph. As far as my testing is concerned, the small primer, small flash hole brass is the way to go for consistent chrono numbers, accuracy, and long case life. I have no experience with Peterson brass so can't speak to its quality, but I can say you won't have made a mistake if you go with Lapua.

Take a look at Alpha Munitions. They make brass specifically catering to the competition crowd. US company with primary focus to make the tightest tolerances in any brass available. Really big with the PRS crowd and starting to make gains in the FTR F class crowd. They make both SP and LP 6.5 creedmore and 308, as well as several other calibers. Small batch manufacturer but one of the best if you're looking for the tightest tolerances from piece to piece in your brass. 308 SRP brass primer pockets run very tight and stay that way. Another option many aren't aware exists as they're fairly new.

Does anybody know neck wall thickness on the alpha 6.5cm?

Guess it really boils down to the calibre. For the 6.5/6 Creedmoor shooters, you can't really go wrong with Alpha/Lapua/Peterson. I'm going to be trying the new Alpha 6XC brass as some has just landed in Australia for the first time. I'd love to see either Alpha or Peterson start to make 6BR brass, I think they'd have no trouble whatsoever selling it due to the number of BR/BRAI/BRX/Dasher shooters around the world.

My 260 was .014 IIRC. I have some I havent turned yet, I'll go measure.

Edit looks like .014-.015 depending on where my ball end mic lands.

That’s on the alpha? Does anybody know thickness on lapua?

Yes that is on the 260 alpha brass. Im not sure about LAPUA 6.5 cases, but my 6br cases were right around the same IIRC. Those I dont have any left unturned.

I edited my above post to say LAPUA.

The .260 cases I measured tonight are definitely Alpha's

Though Im not sure about LAPUA 6.5 cases, but my 6br cases were right around the same IIRC (.014-.015 depending where the mic hit). Those I dont have any left unturned
