If push comes to shove -

I keep looking in stores for reloading components - and buy what I can online. So far I have plenty of primers - eg I can buy Federal 210s - just not 'match'. So - times are a changing.

WHAT IF!

1. Availability becomes a true long term problem.
2. Particular primers disappear ie large rifle and large pistol primers are still available

Has anyone attempted using the pistol primers large or small - to load for rifle - how well do they work? How do they differ? Are they an ultimate option?

Is there one powder and one primer that would work in the widest applications for long term/ bulk purchase?

If things get worse than they are now, finding ways to make your own primers may be the only recourse we have.

That being said, pistol primers will fit in rifle cartridges but you have to be very cautious in doing so as they're generally not as robust in the cup material used. Pressures must be reduced significantly to avoid blowing primers or worse.

Best bet may be in a pistol-caliber rifle, like in the late 1800's. Forget bench rest & high power, instead take up cowboy action as a survival skill :-o

.22 Rim fire 1st choice.

Cheap to keep.

2nd choice

.45 Cal flinter !

Cast your own ammo and in small quantities make your own Black powder if necessary.

No .45 cal bans yet !

Steve

True enough, but it looks like they're starting to put a program in place to remove access to the components!

'Dear Valued Customer:

Please take a moment to note important changes set forth by the Defense Logistics Agency:

Recently it has been determined that fired munitions of all calibers, shapes and sizes have been designated to be Demil code B. As a result and in conjunction with DLA's current Demil code B policy, this notice will serve as official notification which requires Scrap Venture,SV) to implement mutilation as a condition of sale for all sales of fired munitions effective immediately. This notice also requires SV to immediately cease delivery of any fired munitions that have been recently sold or on active term contracts, unless the material has been mutilated prior to sale or SV personnel can attest to the mutilation after delivery. A certificate of destruction is required in either case.

Thank you,

I am sure glad that I kept my 50 cal flintlock. Lets see, charcoal saltpeter & sulfur mixed well. This is how my kinfolk defeated the oppressive government back in 76. That is 1776. The name of the community in my home town where they made the gun powder to use when they went over the mountain to Kings Mountain SC to teach Col. Ferguson and his troops some manners still bears the name Powder Branch.
