if not 75gr A Max ?

Hello,

What would be the 2nd choice for 400yrd plus varmint/target shooting if your gun wont shoot the 75gr A Max ? Gun is a 22-250 with a 26" 1-9.25" twist barrel, it does shoot 69gr smk's very well. But they don't expand much.

Thanks
Robert

The 9.5 twist won't care for the 75 gr Amax but the 55 gr Ballistic tip should do what you want done..

I have good luck with the 60 V-Max in a 1:12 twist 22-250. The bullet seems to be stable well past 500 yards, whereas 55 grain bullets poop out between 400 and 500 yards.(I'm not saying they won't fly that far. The bullets just start to lose stability and groups open up.)

I have a 220Swift with a 1:9 twist that loves the 75 A-Max. That is a true 800 yard plus prairie dog rifle.

The 53 gr V-max is the winner in my book. Better BC than the 60, AND more velocity! They stay above the 1800fps needed for reliable expansion a good 75-100 yards farther out than comparable 55 and 60 grainers. And what the v-max does to critters puts a smile on your face! ;)

I'd try the 64g Berger match varmint HP. Good out of 1/9 .223 bolt & should be good to go.
It's the heaviest .224 varmint bullet below the 75g amax that I know of... Like all Bergers, they are very accurate.

I agree. 53 Max has an advertised. 290 G1 BC. Berger 64 grain varmint is a .294 and you can run the 53 at nearly 50 grain speeds. If you're just wanting a heavier bullet maybe Sierra 65 game king but I have no idea about performance, they might be a little more explosive than the 69smk though.

I have a savage with 1 in 9 twist. It doesn't like the 75amax but loves the 69 or 77 grain smk. I have only shot a crow with the 69smk at 3oo yards but it exploded. ED

Voldoc had many 500 & 600 yard PD kills last summer with the
53 gr V-max. That would be my choice with its high BC.

Another vote for the 53 Vmax it really does a job on groundhogs plus out of my 12 twist it shoots awesome

I second that. I switched to the 53 vmaxs from 75 amaxs on groundhogs. But that was at 223 velocitys. For some reason the 75s dont drop them like the vmaxes

Just ordered some 53gr V Max. I have varget ,3031 and 4064 on hand.
4064 seems to shoot well in this gun with any bullet up to 69 gr.
I'm looking forward to warp speed with high b.c

thanks
Robert

I find it odd youre not getting good expansion with the 69 SMK. Mine have always laid the whop to critters. Everything from prairie dogs to deer showed excellent expansion. The carnage on jacks is severe. Before you give up on the 69 SMK I would suggest you try a different lot of bullets.

I also like the Hornady 60 grain soft point flat base. It may not be quite as accurate as the match grade types but it sure expands and is a bone breaker too!

smk's doesn't make the black jelly like a light jacket or high velocity does.
I'll give the v max a try. Wind is also a bigger factor then what i thought at longer ranges :) that's why i wanted the 75 a max with high BC.

Understandable, I went through the dilemma as well. I found out that at the ranges where the 75gr a-max really shines above the rest...it's simply incredibly hard hit a prairie dog anyways. At least I can't. Keep your shots within 350 yards, and have a hell of a lot more fun than trying to hit them farther out. I know it's so very tempting shooting them from afar, but from experience wasting lots of rounds, and watching my shooting buddies wasting lots of rounds, with a variety of bullets, it's just not worth it.

But if you're not shootin prairie dogs or other similarily small animals, then it doesn't matter.

My experience is that a Krieger 9 Twist Barrel will stabilize a 75gr AMAX above 3200 and a 80 gr AMAX above 3250 fps.
Both are easily attainable with a 22-250 Ackley, 29" bbl, and N165 powder. It makes a great 800yd PD Rifle!
