If buying a .308 Win, what twist rate for 24" barrel?

Even though I am far from an expert a 1-10t is hard to beat as an all around barrel. Sure it maybe over spinning some bullets but they are staying together and are accurate too. Another issues is how much freebore you have. That 125, 155, 175, & 185 are going to require less than your 200+ grain bullets by a large margin to get enough powder to make use of those high b.c.'s.

Wanting to get away from my .243 and step up, eyeing a .308 in either a Savage or the Remington. Both models are the HS Precision and the Savage is a 1:10 and the Remington is 1:11.25

Why don't you just run the numbers?? Check the length of the bullet and check your SG.

As others have mentioned, a 1-10 to 1-11.25 would be suitable. I've been quite pleased with the Berger 175 OTM bullet with these twists. The Berger tactical line will stay relatively stable at longer distances (600+ yards) even with shorter barrels and lower muzzle velocities. What are your intentions for the rifle (distances, slow or rapid fire, etc)? For long range matches, I suggest you eventually get a longer barrel.

I have a Broughton 26" MTU Contour on my FTR rifle. It has a 1/11.25" twist. It shoots Sierra 175 SMK's and Berger 185 Juggs very well. Have not shot anything else out of it as both of these shoot great. I shoot them out to 1000 yds and they perform well.

I have a 12 twist 308 and have shout up to the 185 juggernauts out to 1000 yards with no issues. If I had it to do over I would get a 10 twist so there is no question. My 12 twist liked the 175 smk best of all. But the juggernaut held up better in the wind.

Well my plan is to move up and get away from my troublesome .243 and yes compete in the future shooting long distance. Right now its just been target shooting and some local club long distance matches and my .243 has done well up to a point. However it has been settled now as my trusty .243 has been purchased by a friend for a hunting rifle and I have/had cash burning a hole in my pocket. My future distance shooter has been purchased and should arrive next week. I ordered the Savage and got the model 12BVSS in .308 with the 26 inch barrel with 1:10 twist. Should provide a decent start right off and give me a platform to build on and learn with. Will place my Burris 8-40x50 XTR-II F-class scope on it and impress my friend by making dust clouds just shy of the target... View attachment 1060547

10 Twist will do , I guess the 308 doesn't get the credit it deserves as its been used to shoot 1000 yards as long as I can remember in competition

I did the factory 308 Remmy SPS 24" spoter barrle this fall, it's visited 9 long distance shoots,,, just closing in on the 500 rounds in the last 3 months. About 800 from the F Class rig.

Mostly 400 and 800 meter shoots with the new pipe.

I have another stock and Jewel trigger to attach after hunting season.

She's a sweet shooter for a 9 lb all in rifle, I've been running a 178 ELD-X just shy of max pressure,,, 2635 ft-per seconds.

The best groups shot so far are off the Remple rest with extra large solid core hard bunny-ear bag.
