If buying a .308 Win, what twist rate for 24" barrel?

Wanting to get away from my .243 and step up, eyeing a .308 in either a Savage or the Remington. Both models are the HS Precision and the Savage is a 1:10 and the Remington is 1:11.25

In my opinion, if you shoot anything over 180’s, you’ll need the more 10. Best bet is to ask those who shoot .308s where you shoot. They will be able to advise

Good luck with it

Gerald

If you are not going to shoot 200gr or heavier bullets it doesn't matter both will handle up to 185s, and there are some folks that have shot 200s with great precision with 1:11s. Get the one you like better (Jade shot a 200-13x 1000 yard F-TR national record with 210 JLKs in a 1:11 barrel a couple of yrs ago)

Only .308's around me are AR style rifles because they say the 308 is not a good round for going long distance.

If I remember correctly, the 1:11.25 was the rate that was determined to be optimal for 175 gr projectiles. Either will work fine, the 1:10 MAY give you just a little more flexibility on bullet weights.

I have a .308 Stealth with 1:12 twist and 26" barrel. It will shoot the 185 VLD Target but not the Hybrid or Jug. Couldn't say if a 24" will shoot the 185 VLD Target.

I also shoot Berger 200.20Xs and JLK 210s from a 30" 11-twist barrel. They work just fine.

So the real question I would ask is what specifically do you plan to do with the rifle? Is it for plinking, hunting, shooting for fun, or do you also have some idea of competing with it? If so, you might find other things to be the limiting factor. For example, a 24" would be considered really short for an F-Class rifle. So if you ever decided to go with a longer barrel, the factory twist rate becomes moot. I'd also be thinking about any potential differences in quality, precision, and even little things like the trigger. Savage rifles have an excellent reputation for out-of-the-box precision, but I personally can't stand the Accu-trigger. Check whatever differences you can between the two in person (if possible) before making the purchase and you'll likely be much happoer with your choice in the long run.

Well my plan is to move up and get away from my troublesome .243 and yes compete in the future shooting long distance. Right now its just been target shooting and some local club long distance matches and my .243 has done well up to a point. However it has been settled now as my trusty .243 has been purchased by a friend for a hunting rifle and I have/had cash burning a hole in my pocket. My future distance shooter has been purchased and should arrive next week. I ordered the Savage and got the model 12BVSS in .308 with the 26 inch barrel with 1:10 twist. Should provide a decent start right off and give me a platform to build on and learn with. Will place my Burris 8-40x50 XTR-II F-class scope on it and impress my friend by making dust clouds just shy of the target... :)Savage 12BVSS.jpg

You have chosen wisely.

If you are going to shoot up to the 185gr bullets, then I would suggest the 1:10 twist rate. If you ever plan to shoot the 200gr bullets, like the Berger 200.20X round, I would suggest a 1:9.5 twist rate. For lighter rounds like the 155gr or the 168gr the 1:11 or 1:12 have been reported to do well. Some of the Palma shooters tell me they are running 1:13 but I don't have any personal experience.

Lefty first of all both are great rifles. I have two Rem 700 Milspec 5r 308's Gen 2 with the 11.25 twist factory rifles. Both are proving to be very good so far. I shoot the 168 & 175 Nosler Custom Competition and the 175 RDF. Also have shot the 175 SMK with about the same results. I would think the Savage would have a tighter chamber do to Savage having a zero head space policy in affect any that's what they say. Here is a pic of 5 shots at 100 yards 175 Nosler and 41.0 grains of ArComp Peterson SRP brass.

I own the exact same rifle it was a 308 now a 6br
The bolt lift is a little heavy but the rifle is very capable
I have the load data in my book

Funny thing....... the standard twist of 1:12” for the 308 has worked for the last 60 yrs without a hitch....... even with 190gr Sierra HPBT’s.

Either twist, 1:10” or 1:11.25” will do the job.
1:10” twist is actually on the fast side for most 30 caliber bullets.

Up until the 230+gr bullets came about, there was no need for a faster twist.
The 230’s still stabilise in a 10” twist if you push them fast enough.

Cheers.

Many 308s have been built on 10 twist barrels. That barrel will stabilize some of the heaviest 30 cal bullets and even tho it shoots the lighter bullets as well it may not be necessary in everyone's 308. As stated previously, the the 11.25-12 twist barrels stabilize the 185-200s. Most guys won't shoot more than 185s from there 308s unless competing. I compare the 10 twist 308 to the 8 twist 224 barrels. They stabilize the lightest thru many of the heaviest and if you'll be shooting both with that rifle, get the 10 twist barrel. My 10 twist 308 barrel has only shot 185s at the upper end but shoots the 125-155s very well also. Probably shoots 168-185s the very best in my particular gun.
