Identifying Scope Ring Screw

I am putting a set of 34mm scope rings back into play and need to replace a couple of screws. I know the following:

1) Screws appear to be Fillister heads and Torx. Head diameter measures 0.2385".
2) Screw total length is 0.345" and diameter is 0.1590".
3) Appears to be a #8 machine screw. Thread count is unknown.

Took a screw and a ring top to Lowes and Ace Hardware to see if I could determine the thread count. Both places had #8-32 screws. The #8-32 screws will start to thread for a couple of turns and stop. Not a 32 thread count screw.

I have seen references of #8-40 screws being used in rings. Neither place had a #8-40 screw or a way to check the thread count of my screw. I am guessing that my screw is a #8-40 screw. Eliminating the #8-32 and #8-40 screws, does anyone know of another #8 screw that is used in scope ring sets? Would like to confirm before I order the 40 thread screws. They are not cheap with the shipping.

Thanks for any information.

snyder gave you the correct info. brownells has refill packs and shows the sizes and descriptions in their catalog. ill send you an 8-40 if you want. prob wat it is— let me know.

May be 8-36 which is national fine thread
8-40 is used for receivers , but I’ve seen enough 8-36 on rings that you need to check it
You have a set of calipers
Spend a few bucks on a brownells screw checker , and a set of American and metric thread gauges and you’ll never as us again

Thank you for your kind offer. I will not accept it at this time. I need to work though this myself. If I fail, I may come back to you and buy the screws for you.

This is my fear. I need to keep working this issue until I find a way to confirm thread count before I buy something I cannot eat. LOL.

They are getting harder to find, but some hardware stores such as ACE sometimes carry hardware like this. If they don't have exactly what you need, you might at least find something to identify the thread diameter and pitch.

At 0.159" it is possible that it is an 4mm thread. Easy to mix up M4 with #8.
Lots of, ahem, overseas manufactured rings have metric fasteners.
If it is a metric screw made to ISO standards, it should have a grade stamp somewhere on the head, 8.8, 10.9, etc.
Lots of, ahem, overseas manufactured metric capscrews are not made to ISO standards.
If your tap and die set doesn't have both Metric and Imperial thread pitch gauges, you need another tap and die set.

Top of ring has a pair of wings with what looks like the cock of an arrow sticking down between them. One side of the top of the ring has a 3 in a box. The other side has a 4 in a box. I think they are cheap rings but they are solid.
APA (American Precision Arms). The boxed 3 & 4 signifies that they are for 34mm tube diameter scopes. They are anything but cheap. They are a very high quality ring and I'll bet they are 8-40. I have several sets and they are all but unobtanium as for now. They've been sold out forever and I'm getting the feeling they won't make any more. I hope I'm wrong because they're a very good ring and have one of the lowest heights available. I'd get ahold of them and I'd bet they'll send you replacements.
