Identify this stock wood???

We've built stocks from a lot of different woods - besides the normal different Walnut species - birch, sycamore (did you know a lot of Remingtons were stained sycamore?), Osage Orange (good for Kansas hedge posts), Ironwood, Purpleheart, and commercial laminates, but we made this one from a COFFEE TABLE that we were told was Maple! I wasn't too sure, as it seemed extremely light, so, for security of strength, I laminated in some American Walnut. Do you other wood experts agree that it's Maple?

I agree. Looks like burl. Or maybe cherry burl. But knowing how burl forms on trees, that's a one in a billion stock blank.

This is how 99% of the burl forms on trees

So to get a burl for a stable stock blank...oh man it had to be huge!! What a beautiful old tree.

Not an expert, just a sucker for pretty wood.. but yes, burly maple would be my first guess. Nice, no matter what it is though.

Looks like amboyna burl. Used to make pens with it. If it is, it's worth more than the rifle and scope.
Price wise I was thinking that too. If the blank caused a much bigger piece of wood to be chopped up, that is an incredible loss of value. Big slabs of burl are used in very high end furniture that can cost as much or more than a new car.

Possible couple other matches, redwood maybe?

It looks a bit like the soft maple that we have growing in our area. Box Elder is another name for it. Grows massive burls.
Usually has at least a few streaks of red, though. Very lightweight.
Most species of maple are around .55-.60 specific gravity, so not stuff you would call light.
I have played with redwood burl, and while it was beautiful, you could dent it easily with a fingernail.

Hmmm, I've never heard of that Amboyna! Sure could be if it's less dense than maple. Not box elder; it always has a red fungus in it, and it's really soft and plain.

This got me thinking. A lot of furniture from the 1920s on was made with blonde figured maple. A lot of it is sitting in goodwill and similar stores. That might be a good source for gunstock makers out there that I never thought of before!

Yep, the photo of Bc'z looks exactly like it! What do you think it's worth?
Hard to say really, depends on quality of boards, stock makers time, inlet, pillars, and bedded, with a high end finish on stock??
I'd venture to say some of the stocks I work on could be upward of $2500 once all factors are figured in, where others could be half that.
