Ideal barrel length ?

What would be the ideal barrel length for a 6mm BR live varmint rifle shooting up to 80gr. bullets?

Thanks, Lonnie

You'll get many opinions on this, but given that you can save money on blanks set for a 26" finished length, that's what I'd go for. Bruno's Shooter Supply has blanks in stock, and www.thebarrelman.com has real good prices on Shilens. If I was shooting mostly off bags I'd go with a Max HV taper or maybe an MTU contour. For a "walking varminter" I'd go with a lighter taper.

Nice thing about a 26" is you can always cut it down if you want something shorter and stiffer. But 26" will give you plenty of velocity for the 75gr Vmax etc.

for a heavy bullet, I would want a longer barrel for the added velocity, but only so long as the weight of the rifle could tolerate a heavy barrel with a barrel length of 26 inches or more.

I have a 6BR with a 1in8 twist that does well with heavy 90+grain bullets and another in 6BR with a 1in12 twist that I had finished to 24 inches and is balanced very well and shoots lighter bullets. My rifle with a 24inch barrel seems to be a great compromise for function and velocity with 70gr bullets.

I agree witht he previous post that starting with a 26in tube gives you the option to go shorter later on if you decide the rifle is too nose heavy or unweildly.
