IBS rules and Farley front rests.

Ibs rules state there must be 1/2 inch between any part of the bag holder and stock. I have a edgewood bag in my farley and would not pass that rule. What to do? This is concerning a light gun 600-1000.

Well I know I could shim it up. I am just suprised they sell a rest that is not legal for the type of competition it is sold for. I was just hoping I was understanding the rules wrong.

The bag itself has to be at least 1/2" thick vertically. Your Edgewood bag doesn't measure 1/2" in thickness?

The bag is supposed to be 1/2" above or away from any part of the bag holder on the rest.

There can be no more then a 1/2" of contact to the stock.
And the container/sand-bag most be at least 1/2" thick.

If the flat part of your bag is at least 1/2" above the container, and the ears are at least 1/2" thick, your bag is legal (I've never seen an Edgewood bag that isn't).
Then as long as the runners on the stock (that contact the bag ears) are no more then 1/2" thick, you will also be legal.

I had to shim my front bags....they were over 1/2 inch high, but when I put my gun on them with the built in rails, the rails cut into the bag and the 1/2 all but disappeared. i didn't take any chances...just simply shimmed the bag up just to be on the safe side..

Looks like I will have to shim it up a bit. Top of the bag to top of the bag holder is about 3/8''. That is the one rule that I think is pointless. I don't think anyone would use a thin little rock hard bag even if they could. :

Unless you run into some grumpy old codger, I believe you will be just fine with the 3/8". I have NEVER witnessed anyone measure the front rest bag.

He's right about the rule, and that Farley rests combined with Edgewood bags fail to meet the rule(as written).
The latest Seb NEO & others also fail to meet the rule..

It's not at all surprising that it's never been enforced though. Most do not know IBS rules.

Last year at the 1K Nationals, a guy was so intent on checking other's bag set-ups he missed his own relay......

I don't have a Farley....But I do have an Edgwood with a Hart rest. The 1/2 inch thing was close due the tall "container" on the Hart rest, so I shimmed it just to be on the safe side.

I was at the MN state 1000 yard match when Sally Bauer had shot a possable world record. The match stopped right there, the match diretor, the rules committee, and the three guest refs were called over. Two different tape measures came out, along with a camera. There must have been eleventeen different measurements taken along with photo proof. It isn't always the "grumpy old codgers"!!!

Well, who do we email to try and get a rule change. It is a ridiculous rule in my opinion. It has no bearing on how you shoot if you bag container is 1/4 or 1/2 inch from the stock. Just seems like a way for a sore looser to screw a guy out of a win/record. : I heard this happened recently at a big shoot by a well know shooter.

Just my opinion;
They're just making sure that sand bag means sand-in-bag, and between gun & support.
This kind of thing keeps it old school so that records remain apples to apples.

When you change it, you really cut free what has been achieved, for what could be.
And new records would no longer compare to old..
Again, IMO, it's a mistake to cave into 'desires' of shooters, while compromising the challenges that have well served competitive spirit all along.

You can always have what you desire outside of competition.
You know, the reason IBS competition seems such an abstract is because it's not a sport, but a spectacle. If it were a sport, shooters in major events would have qualified to be there.
They would complete benchrest school, where they tested on the rules.
They would earn enough points in lower events to qualify and represent competition to a standard.
Then, they would achieve above a cut over the years, or drop out(lose their qualified status).
In the PGA, these members are called 'professionals'.

Ya, I agree with why they have the rules. Maybe they should just measure some of the rests for sale and in use today and update the rule. Or not.

I'm an amateur spectator. I don't even have to pay to watch
And I don't mean to offend 'competitors', or the IBS.
I don't mean to offend you.

I'm only calling what I see from my perspective.
While there are many in IBS who truly represent competition, and are professional by nature, there are far more who are not.
They merely show up & shoot because the format allows just that. They're not competitors, but participants, and if they manage anything it's anomalous. This only serves to obscure the efforts of those true competitors, who are consistently prepared and consistently shoot better than most.

I realize many entries/contributions are good for IBS & clubs, but there are costs for this as well.
That there are shooters on the line that don't respect the rules, is one cost.
And as a spectator, I guess I'm seeing what would be too many pickup trucks 'racing' at Daytona.

In golf....the participants call infractions upon themselves because thats the way golf is! In shooting... one waits till someone else calls an infraction then argues the point. In golf...that is called integrity.
It is each and everyones own responsibility to not only know the rules as well as to follow them.

You have cleared it up. I think I will just make a new top. I don't like the idea of shimming the bag. I'm still surprised these manufactures make them this way. I wonder how many guys show up to a match and get that surprise?

Go to an IBS sanctioned competition and look at the number of competitors using the SEB and Farley rests set up as sent from the manufacture. Obviously, they meet the IBS criteria.

I set up my Farley rest to check dimensions at the bag. Measuring from the top of the plate to the leading edge of the bag= 3/8".
Measuring from the top of the plate to the center of the bag= 3/4". Laying my gun on the bag and measuring from the top of plate to bottom of stock= 3/4".
In sum, it is certainly legal. Farley and SEB would not be selling rests that do not comply with the current rules.

I see you removed your post on BRC regarding the rests zfastmalibu, after Seb Lambang (SEB) set you straight on the legality of both his rests, and Farley's rests. He merely asked you to reveal your real name, to assure you, you know nothing about which you speak ;D

BTW, I believe you pissed off SEB with your accusation that he and Mr. Farley don't know what they are doing
