IBS 1000 YD Nationals

This summer a couple of folks at White Horse Range here in WV set me up with a rifle and ammo to shoot a practice target. It bit me good. Gotta thank Stan Taylor and "Rookie" from Douglas Barrels for the chance! I fell in love with Rookie's 6x47. That is how you get new guys involved. Invite them, set them up with good equipment, and coach them. I have nothing but good to say after hanging out with those guys. Didn't see a thing wrong with how that IBS shoot went. Of course, they did have volunteers that worked the pit all day, so the shooters could keep shooting.

Mike, 600 shoot 2 target and 5 rounds per target, light and heavy. 1000 5 rds on light and 10 rds on heavy, sounds like it would be hard on barrels. Benches are limited for 1000.....jim

The 1000 yard rules are perfect the way they are. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I do not like 600 yard rules, but live with them when I shoot 600. The 600 yard people can use our rules when they shoot with us.

Technically, there are two sets of rules for IBS 1k.......standard match rules...ie...shootoff system, and the national championships, which is an agg.

Let's keep them that way. The three target agg should be sufficient for the nationals and allow it to be completed in two days. Some have limited time and resources.

I am not trying to stir the pot here, but we were told by some eastern shooters last year that "if you don't have the time or the funds to shoot out east, or don't like how we run things out here, then stay home". So...in the same spirit....if you don't have the time or resources to shoot a four target agg ..stay home. The overall majority of shooters, especially the ones I talked to, LOVED the four target agg (Iowa and Harris). We were done shooting by noon on day three...had the awards, and were on the road by Three. This year at WV they started the matches a day early, only had a three target, two day shoot, and I lost a day at work. No different than having a four target agg and shooting on F, S and Sun. I am not dissing the WV guys..they ran a HELL of a match, and dug up a truck load of great prizes. The best I have ever seen...both in 2011 and 2012!!!! Hats off to you guys!!! Other than the winner and closest to the center, there were no prizes (other than door prizes) at this years IBS 600. It was my first match, and maybe that is how they all are. It doesn't matter a lick to me, I will do my darndest to make every IBS 600 and 1K national event...no matter what the format or where it is held!!!

The biggest complaint I hear about the IBS's 1K format ...not enough shooting. Some of the eastern ranges only hold 1 match a day.....5 shots for LG and 10 for HG!! 15 shot day...kinda weak! That is also why the 600 yard format is gaining so much ground so quickly...LOT's more shooting!! I very much love the 1K game, but the 600 yard game is flat out BIG FUN!!! Same with "F" class......lots of shooting and lots of fun.

And and far as gaining new shooters in both the 600 yard and 1K game, it needs to be shouted from the tallest buildings...You can be pretty darn competitive with a factory Savage rifle in 6br or 6.5 284 and a decent scope.. I have had my butt handed to me more than once by a stock savage!!!! Also, if you see someone just "looking around", do everything in your power to get them to the line . i practically beg new guys to shoot my equipment. Actually been beaten by my own equipment in both regular relays and shootoffs. A lot of the guys who I try get started have one thing that they are scared of....how much a custom comp gun can cost....along with the NF or March scope. They are not wrong...it's fricken hugely expensive..but so are motercycles, snowmachines, classic cars and wifes!!! Pick up a stock gun and come have some fun!!!

A national event should be BIG. Not to mention a 4 target agg at 1000 yards is more fair. 1000 yard nationals is held on labor day weekend, missing work should not be an issue. Last but not least, Todd if you have the right wife it can actually be profitable!! LOL

With all the external forces we have attacking our sport and guns in general we the shooting community should be doing all we can to keep united and grow the sport. to say nothing about the increasing cost. I will most likely be attending the nationals this year which is a 1000 mile drive each way, so to shoot three days it will give me 5 days trip, to shoot 4 days it will take 6 days. That is with one L o n g day of driving each way. So you are talking $400 in gas, $600 in motels, food, and then match fees $150 and shooting cost. It is expensive and we need to attract new shooters what are not retired. It would be nice to have all the time and shoot 4 days but three is enough for most of us.

As far as attracting new shooters....I don't think that the nationals is the proper venue to attract new shooters..pretty much for the exact reasons you give. We need to get the new shooterrs involved at the club level on regular match days. Throw a new guy into the mix at a national event and my guess is that he will be so overwhelmed by the number of shooters and the equipment, among other things that he will run away and never come back. I have absolutely no issues with new shooters at the nationals, and will help them any way I can, but it is just not the place for them.

Just my .02,
Tod

I agree with your comments, But, new shooters read these forum threads. Reading this, it sounds like the more experiences shooters (the one that go to nationals) don't see things much the same way. Maybe IBS should set up some guidelines for the nationals. There is still the concern about how much time one needs to take off from work to attend a national competition. That does effect how many show up and shoot.

Being a national event I would like to know. How many benches. How many shooters . How many classes. What the entry fee is. What prizes or money pay back .Good Shooting Larry

How many benches depends on the range. Some have more than others. There is no limit to the number of shooters...as long as you register by 8 am, or whatever the cut off is the day of the shoot. I have seen as little as 90 and as many as 150+...but i am fairly new to the sport. Usually the entry fee is around $150.00 for a national event if you shoot both classes. IBS shoots two classed of rifles...Light gun....must be 17.0 pounds or lighter, and Heavy gun....anything goes (40 cal max). lots of guys shoot their light gun in the HG class. You can now leave your muzzle break on if you wish...rule change in 2012. Prizes are dependent on what the host club can beg, barrow or steal from various manufacturers. 99% of the guys I know aren't there for the prizes. Bragging rights and comroddery are the big draw. Hanging around like minded people and soaking up the atmosphere is a BIG draw for me!!!

Too early to know right now.

Two, Light Gun and Heavy Gun.

What the entry fee is.
Last year was $160 for a 3 target agg. A 4 target agg could be a hair more, but then Whitehorse had paid target pullers figured in. A WAG says $150 for 4.

You pays your money and you takes your chances. No cash payback, just prizes, but shoot well and you can leave pleased......

Tom, Sorry I missed you post yesterday. I was getting a new stock to drop my heavy gun weight from 40 to 24 pounds. If you do the same, I will carry your gun. We have 15 benches so will need many relays. Some of can afford the expense of extra days, but it a burden on many shooters. The best competition is when the most good shooters compete, not the number of targets. If targets, why not make it a week long and shoot six?

You are right...not my idea. We better stick with the three day, four target agg!!
