Years ago there was a 243Win and a 6mm Rem. I can remember when they were introduced. 243 sort of won. Then i saw a 6BR. I thought it was strange. And now there is a different flavor of 6mm/243 for everyday of the week and more, between the 6BR and 243. Can some one give me a quick summary of the various rounds and a description of their design. I have never owned one but am now thinking of getting or building a 6 mm for paper punching and varmints. I have available a either a long or short action. I can reload, form reform brass and like to tinker.

regardless of caliber first thing u need to determine is exactly what u need done. ie. what distances, what's intended purpose, what type of barrel life do u hope to get and on and on.
For a no muss-no fuss round it's hard to beat the plain Jane 243. The 6BR is probably one of the most accurate rounds in that group and tuning doesn't get much easier. From there, it just depends on how much you like to tinker/tune. I'm working with a 243 AI right now, and initial results show great promise.

I have always wanted to build a barrel burner such as the 6mm-284.My friend had one built that I tore apart to fix everything the smith goofed up.Once we squared the action and bolt face and lightly lapped the lugs ,it became the most accurate varmint gun I have shot.The first group I shot was in the .2's and the second was right around .200 thou.It had a hart barrel and now at about 1000 rounds is ready for a new barrel.It is so accurate that it is boring.LOL
7x57 Mauser is the base for the 6mm Remington. More umph than a 243 and still works in a short action.
It can duplicate the 243 WSSM in velocity, load it with 60 gr for PD 75 Gr for coyotes, 90 gr and above for deer and antelope. An "old" cartridge overshadowed by todays newer and better
I have used one for 30 years on PD to antelope, A friend has had two rebarreled three times, he has shot one since the early '60s. Not the accuracy of the 6BR, but a good bedding and quality barrel it will out shoot 90% of the operators, when put up against the majority of 6's.

paper punching and varmints...that's your plan as has been mine for15+yrs. i'v tried most of the above cartridges. i still can't grasp the love affair with the 243...a barrel burner,yes. some love it but how many matches has it won? it is a fantastic deer slayer! i have a 243 AI and a 6-284, the latter killing ghogs at 532 and 520 yds, but it will eat a barrel in time and it's recoil at the bench is there. the 6mm BR is absolutely the answer for paper and varmints, even at long range if the twist is chosen accordingly. the cartridge is inherently accurate and one gets small groups quickly. bullet and powder choices are easy. my 14 twist will push a 68 gr at 3450 and has enough energy at 400 yds to drop small varmints. use a faster twist and heavier bullets and 600 yd varmints don't do well. brass and barrels last a very long time, esp if you don't load hot or shoot fast. even a rem 700 action, trued, is shooting groups in the ones while my custom action with all the expensive additives will shoot repeatedly in the ones and zeros, which absolutely amazes me. hope this helps.

Given that you are wanting to "paper punch AND varmints...... and like to tinker"...... then consider any one (or more) of the following. 6xc, 6br, 6 Dasher, or 6BRX. Any will probably give substantially more barrel life than the 243 and the 6mm Rem. The 6xc and the 6br can be just loaded and shot and both(properly loaded and tuned) can give great accuracy. The Dasher or the brx need to be formed. Both are noted by many as being very accurate.
I have owned numerous 243's and still have one in the safe, but the 6xc's and the 6br are the ones that get I grab first when paper punching or varminting. Now if deer are what you consider varminting too, then I'd lean more towards the 6xc, dasher or brx. JMHO. WD
I think that a well built 6BR should do the trick nicely for the applications that you have in mind. If you want to shoot long range targets, a 9" twist and suitable throat length should set you up just fine, and IMO for varmint work, the loss in accuracy using shorter, lighter bullets, that are seated short of the rifling should not be a big deal. On the other hand, if like most of us, the opportunity to shoot longer ranges is limited, you might consider a slower twist, shorter throat version of the same caliber. A friend has a couple, one a 14" twist, and the other a 12" and they are both accurate. If you are primarily going for 1-200 yd bench shooting, with and occasional foray into the varmint fields, a 14" twist, with a relatively short throat (.035) should get you where you want to go, and in the right rifle, with top components, tuning and shooting, put you right next to a PPC in accuracy. That, you will like a lot.
