Please post a pic and a short discription of your favorite prairie dog shooting rifle. Thanks Lee

Remington 6mmAI, built by Richard Franklin. I used it in South Dakota for prairie dogs, but mostly for groundhogs and foxes in Western MD.

thanks for sharing. that pistol is what i need here in illinois. We cant hunt deer with centerfire rifles but we can use pistols, with restrictions. We have an illinois legal centerfire chambering that is simply a 221 fireball neck up to 30CAL. I could sit at my indoor bench, watch TV eat breakfast, reload ammo and shoot a deer out to 300 yards if i had that rig of yours. Very cool!! Lee

Skeet, we used to have a goofy law like that up here behind the cheddar curtain. It was shotgun only for long guns, but centerfire cartridges OK to use in handguns. Never could see the reasoning but I purchased myself a Savage 510 F bolt action hand cannon in .243 cal. I hated carying it, but it would shoot pretty well from a rest. I shot a nice 11 pointer at a rangefinder verified 300 yards with it. I went out to fire up the outdoor woodburner and saw him standing in the sun with the sunlit antlers gleaming. I gathered up my orange vest, 243 hand cannon and climbed up on top of the wood pile. Cranked the 2-7 Leupold up to 7 and squeezed one off. He only went about 20 yards. They have now passed law making rifles legal statewide here, unless a municipality has an ordinance against it.

Well, as soon as I get to go prairie dog hunting, this will be it. I have the loads ready, all I need is to arrange the hunt. This is a 6 SLR chambered and action trued by Preacher. Gre Tan corrected the bolt timing, bushed the bolt, and replaced the firing pin assembly. Jewell trigger with safety and bolt release. Ken Farrell 10 MOA scope base. Diamond patteren bolt knob by Paul the bolt fluter. Barrel is an 8 twist Brux, so I'll be able to do like Preacher and combine an antelope hunt with the prairie dogs. Action is a Rem 700. Stock is by Baer, I finished it out and auto clear coated it.

A pair of savages

Top is a Savage 112 BVSS 223 (on it's second factory barrel). First barrel lasted 12,000 rounds and accounted for over 10,000 kills! Screwed on a new $100.00 factory barrel and the new one shoots as good as the old one. Factory trigger tuned and Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 on top. Also installed a Score High Single Shot adapter for the long action. She has been used so many times the bolt cycles like a custom!

Second rifle is a Savage 12 with a SSS 20BR barrel. Again the factory trigger has been tuned, a single shot adapter installed for the short fat case and it sits in a B&C Duramax Stock. It has 20 MOA Burris inserts and a Nikon 6.5x20 scope. I drag this rifle out when the winds kick up or the dogs are out beyond 400 yards. I have a lot of PDog rifles but these are my two favorites!

I've seen a lot of PDs before. Is the one on the left normal sized and the others micro-dogs or was that big one on steroids? Odd coloration compared to ones that I've seen (or is that not a PD?).

No, those are rockchucks (yellow bellied Marmots) LOL. Three little guys from this year and one mature chuck. I take the 20BR out chuck hunting now and again.

Mike.

This pic from June 2012 shows my latest favorite No.3 on the left with my previous latest favorite on the right. Seems like everytime I have a rifle rebarreled, it becomes my favorite until the next one. The day after this pic was taken, I hit a PD at 709 yds and this past June I extended that to 915 yds. I had some near misses at a little over 1000 but no hits, maybe next year. I was up 23 inches from a 200 yd zero at 915.

Details: Ruger No.3, Shilen #7HV 8" twist .224 barrel 27"long, Kipplinger set trigger, 6.5-20x40 Leupold in Burris Signature rings, Weaver #85 bases.
Cal is my wildcat .219DW PDK. Brass is R-P 30-30, 1.900 long, 35 degree shoulder, .250 dia. .270 long neck.
Load is 34.0gr H4350, 75gr A-Max, Fed 210M, 3200fps.
The piece of brass on the left is ready to fireform with a 53gr V-Max, the fireformed brass is loaded with a 75gr A-Max.

All but the No.3 on the left have been favorites at one time, it will probably become my favorite after it gets a new fast twist barrel.

6 Br , neck .268 .Krieger 1x8 HV 18.75 including Vai's brake , XP 100 action cleaned up , Jewel trigger with safety with bolt release ,McMillian br stock pillared and bedded ,Davidson base Kelbly rings 25 moa ,N/F 8 x 32 Br scope .

As for the dead critters posted eariler, the one on the left appears to be juvinile rockchuck.......(or a rebelious PD off his diet!). There's many places where rockchucks and PD's coexist, looks like this may be one of 'em.

"Favorite Prairie Dog Rifle"? That's like asking which son is my favorite. 18 PD/Rat rifles makes it hard to pick a favorite, but here's the one that has seen the most PD combat: Holland-built Pac-Nor/McMillian/M700 in .223 Ackley. This baby has launched over 6,000 PD's and ground squirrels since being built in '98.

Another favorite.....Pac-Nor 11-twist in 204 Ruger on another M700:

These daze, a Cooper in 20 VarTarg is the current love affair.....pure efficiency in a small package. :)

They all get the job done, but lately, smaller seems to be better.......this is all good stuff!
