I have two Bald Eagle rests. My main complain is they are too light or maybe I am clumsy, but it is always moving around.

Is there a basic joystick top rest out there that stays put for under $1000?

Urban, I'm not sure what the Shade-tree rests are going for but the SEB rests are very good indeed, but above 1000 bucks and if your looking to get a new one then your looking at waiting in line or finding a new/good used one in a classifieds area on a forum.
I personally like the SEB MAX rest as it offers such a great deal of flexibility of what it can accommodate as far as forend width and rifle weights.
And SEB builds these rests very precise so once you get it set up they are a joy to use, even with a 70 Lb. rifle provided the counterweights are set up correctly.

Regards,

My Bald Eagle is a triangle. And it is so light when I put the rifle back on the stop after firing the rear leg will jump off the ground. It is just rickety.

I have never seen a Shade tree rest, just the top.

urb,,,you didnt say what kinda use it was goana see ,,,,I shoot short range (heaviest gun is 13.5 lb) and long range LG (under 17 lbs) and use a Farley with no complaints,,,,several shooters also use the shade tree with good results mounted on the base of thier choozing,,,,I m shure it would work for an F-class gun as well (~22 lbs)...Roger

I bought a SEB Neo and had the same problem, as I was used to shooting off a Hart cast iron rest with the heavy plate under it. It weighs 48 pounds. I recently was gifted a Farley, and brother its the real deal for my style shooting. We get along just fine! Find you a Farley, its heavy enough to stay put.

The Farley is the one to get and I see them for sale regularly for between $900 and $ 1,000. I’ve owned a Shade Tree unit and they work pretty good. On them the weight comes from whatever rest base you use. The Farley’s are a better rig and generally weigh more.

Bruno’s have new ones for sale right now for $1000
Arms list has a used one for $900

There is a guy at the Wiliamsport 1000 Yard BR Club that makes a beautiful one for $1,150.00. Takes two guys to lift it, but it doesn't move. One is on my To Buy list this year. I am sure Joe Salt will be able to fill in the name and contact.

My first quality rest was a Bald Eagle aluminum triangle. I used it to sight in hunting guns up to 300 Ultra Magnum. Then I started in Hunter Class BR and VFS class BR. I never had that problem if I tapped the feet into the bench or used super feet under the legs, used the proper bags, had the side tension correct, and maintained the bag and stock friction as constant as possible. It may just be technique.....My style is that of a picker- I never run the target ( runner = shoot as fast as possible). Also I always have the front stop covered with some sort of padding ( cushions the foreward movement) and from thousands of rounds put down range with various rests I developed a feel for returning the rifle to battery without upsetting the rest.
A joystick style rest will have no different effect -all things being equal (weight) . FWIW I also use a Farley for competition, but solely for quicker target acquisition.

A SEB mini with the f class feet is the route I went. About $700 for rest and another hundred or so for the feet. I have had tripod rests and slingshot rests made of aluminum, cast iron, and steel. I have also had a steel plate based rest that weighed in excess of 40 lbs. The SEB mini is excellent due to the collapsible legs, full adjustability, and indexable coax top(ie. easier to line up on target). It’s not some lightweight piece of junk. My money is on the SEB mini.

Just my $.02

I use a Bald Eagle cast iron base with a Farley top. Works great for me and is much better than using bags or a standard front rest. I do not compete but just shoot to see if smaller groups are possible with different bullets, powders, and all the things we try at the reloading bench.

I also use the cast iron Bald Eagle Slingshot with the Shade Tree top. It does not move and is more than adequate for just regular sighting in.

I too have a shadetree top on a cast iron slingshot bald eagle base and it has been flawless. I would have a hard time justifying a more expensive top as nice as the shadetree has been.
