I think I am about finished... with firewood

Be thankful you live where you do..... here in LA county they banned wood fireplaces in new construction. Natural gas only now.

you live in LA, and not Louisiana, LA?? you can’t have a fire place?? I have 4 in my house in ga. The Russians have won the long game, comrade.

BTW, Georgia ain’t far behind, the New Yorkers who moved here knows what’s better for me than I do.

We just had an early ice storm. Worst since mid 90s. Center half of Oklahoma most trees broken to pieces but some untouched.
Thousands of tons good hardwood oak walnut pecan going to the dump.
No effort by anyone to segregate. Toss it all out.
I dont use my fireplace but am saving the wood from my home.
Photo is moms home. Untouched by the big shade pecan tree.

I have heated with wood for years but have oil heat that works great. Something about planning ahead and having a shed with a couple years worth makes me not dread winter so much. Used no oil last year and stayed warm. All the mess is downstairs and wife doesn’t mind putting in a piece or two during the day. A little work probably is better for you than sitting on couch. Nothing like going out on a cold day and working in the pile. Heck my son sold enough wood to pay for first semester of college and have living money too. Wouldn’t know what to do with myself in dead of winter if i didn’t have wood to work up and next on the list after a fine shooting rifle is a good saw to cut a big fat piece with.

I just hate seeing good wood go to waste .

At the moment I have 7-8 cords stacked and ready, I burn about 4 cord a year but can only heat about 1/2 the house because of the way it is laid out. I been doing it going on 40 years now and I no longer cut and split. After 8 lumbar surgeries it is just easier to buy it already done, just have it delivered and then stack it.
We already had to fire it up for a few days but as of now it is back near 70 and looks to be pretty mild for at least a week and a half.
Right now I have a weeks worth of gas for generator, about 5 weeks worth of fuel oil in the tank, full tank ( 120 gallons) of propane and plenty of fire wood. So I am ready to start winter and may hibernate when it gets cold out, just sit in front of the stove and read a few good books.

We are still doing wood. Yes its allot of work. Nice when the snow is flying and the stove is humming. Probably going the pellet route soon.

That's really a sad comment for what's been going on and I'm from NY...

Wood trivia question. What is it? I've split a lot of wood but this is the most gnarly, hateful, stringy, tough, spiteful, toughest of all of them. I cut up a dead tree and the last two pieces, I said the heck with splitting it.
Hint: It's not native to the U.S.

Dumb question, but when you guys count your cords for the winter, are they face cords, or 4x4x8 cords? Wondering what it takes to heat with wood.
Lots of hard work gets rewarded when the weather turns ugly

Los Angeles county, yes the banned wood burning fireplaces. You can only use natural gas. And yes people leave here, bring their liberal politics with them and ruin that state too. There are more California transplants living in Nevada than native Nevadans. Probably what flipped Arizona. Crazy weather here, we were 90F Friday and 50F Saturday with hail and lightening.

Wood heat is great. But do yourself a favor and superinsulate and seal up the house. I know of people getting through a long and cold ND winter on 2 cords because they have a really efficient wood stove and a very tight, well-insulated house.
