I screwed up and had an Oops.....

Really odd that it happened on the 7 or 8th fired shot.

Cases were multiple reloads and trimmed each time. Possible tight chamber in the web area causing Clicker type issues? I had this happen on a 300 prc. Blew a primer 3 grains under previous light ejector mark.

Primer is unlikely

Powder possible but like someone said above with your combo you are going to be hard pressed to fit enough powder to get that result.

Bullet? I have seen reports of there being one odd bullet in a box from the factory.

This is my suspicion. One misplaced next bore diameter larger bullet from factory

I am surprised in a way no one has asked or mentioned. NO, I had not been consuming adult beverages during the loading process. I have been on the wagon now since 04/16/2021. So I can't blame myself for being that stupid.........

Another thing. I didn't keep the spent primer that fell from the action when I was able to extract the case. But the primer was not pierced nor did it appear to be overly flattened or distorted. It had the appearance of a normal spent primer as if it had just been punched out. Strange, considering the primer pocket expanded .015". It was very sooty though.

I am pretty sure I would have felt a larger diameter bullet being seated. I didn't feel anything different from any of the others. I load on a Zero so can't blame any funkiness on the press for a lack of feel. Your theory does have merit though. Have you ever heard of Berger misplacing a bullet like that?

I have not but i remember reading of someone finding a single wrong bullet in a fresh box of bullets.

The bullet in question landed about 1 1/4" out of the group at 1:00. Your theory is a possibility and I cannot discount it. Didn't feel it seating the bullet, but..........

Could it be that you had some sticky residue in the case- such as lube, you put powder in the case, dumped the case contents back in the hopper, and charged it again?

I've seen powder stick in the neck before for this reason.

Accidentally anneal it twice?

If it was already hot and went right back in, you could have softened the base of the case.

Any chance there was moisture in it and you had a doubled explosion?

I once had a Berger 6mm 95 in a box of 6mm 65s or 68s. It was pretty easy to see when handling but if it wasn’t such a big difference in weight I could have not noticed.

Thinking about a bullet in a different caliber, would have not chambered, unless your necks were turned down to a ton of clearance.

Personally I’d be quite concerned that the root cause has yet been identified. At least get the action inspected by a gunsmith.

I strongly disagree with you. Actually what you say makes zero sense.
If you load one round at a time where you fill the case with powder and then seat the bullet vs filling all the cases with powder on a loading block then visually checking that all the cases have the same powder level.

I could repeat myself I guess.

I did get a single 308 220? gn bullet in a 100 pc box of 168's.

Interestingly had a similar thing happen with Sierra's; a 220 SMK in a 500 pc box of 175's.

Guess I'm just lucky like that.

Going back to a previous guess, would a 25 cal bullet seated in a 6mm even chamber? I wouldn't expect so (but I also don't have a 25 cal, so...)

I've seen this happen when brass has been oversized. I've had it happen occasionally on max rounds when I pushed the shoulder back too far. Any way you can compare fired brass (not this one) to sized brass to check setback?
I bump .003”. Measurements seem pretty consistent and I measure fairly often.

Thanks for the responses thus far. It’s been a good conversation about my screw up. I’ve been loading for rifles for a very long time and it has been an eye opener. I am going to be on the road for a few days and may not comment during that time. Keep the conversation going if like. If not, don’t screw up like me. However the hell I did it!
