I need some input from

several of you more experienced shooters, builders and smiths...
I have been sucked into the local boys club at our range and have shot my deuce mag against their bigger stuff. They shoot score and agg matches to 300 yds on Snday mornings.
I don't know if I would ever attempt to enter a formal shoot anywhare but the possibility exists.
I would like to build a switch barrel rifle, probably 30 br and 6 br improved,of one design or another).
What action would you start with?
Whose barrels would you use?
Whoe would you get to do the work?
What stock would you choose?
What trigger would you choose?
And...Which scope would you buy and what bases and rings?
This is not meant to start any arguments, everyone here should know the old saying about opinions, and should not get their feelings hurt! That is not my intent!
I just want to get the most bang for my buck all around and have a rifle that is competitive.
If you so desire you can PM me or email me so that nobodys feelings get crushed... ;-D
Thanks in advance
Mark

Ok I'll bite. Your leaving a lot of room for opinions though.
Some will partially agree other won't.
If you have a rem 700 you can re barrel and re stock it .
Have it trued up a bit and you should be good .
300 yds leaves a lot of room for a case choice.
There are probably several rifles for sale here on the site also. My favorite for 300 is the 308 if you don't mind recoil. If you do then maybe a 6 BR with a 10 twist and about 85 to 90 gr bullets There should be plenty of data for them right here. Read guns of the week and you can take it from there. Great stuff is right here on this site,
I hope this help,s you a bit

I would go with a custom action. Pandas are good and so are Bats. If I were to buy a cusom to shoot comp with, I would try to find one used, And just get a new barrel. As for shooting just 300 and closer, I would go with the 6ppc or 6br. I would go with the 6br first though, just bc you have the option to shoot longer if chosen. Scope, cant go wrong with nightforce, or leupold. Barrel, Kreiger or Spencer. Trigger, Jewell. But you could get by with the stuff that cost a little less if you wanted to.

markr,

I will go with the others on USED. I have a Hall, Stiller diamondback, and Bat B, all were used. You can get a good buy. A PPC bolt face can be opened up to 308, some come for both.
You have the cal down 30 Br great for score, I have 6BRX's .

Action BAT, Stiller, Kelby, and any of them made on CNC, you can get bolts, and barrels will fit from gun to gun. If I were buying one today it would be a Bat or Stiller Diamondback, I like both the same.

Trigger - Jewell !

Barrel - I have more Kreiger's than any, but all are good.

Scopes - Weaver or Sightron 24 or 36X Great scopes for the money. I can't see paying more for a scope, unless you go to the Leoupold LR or NF BR for longe range.

Bases Weaver type bases,Leupold QD steel) and Burris Zee rings with inserts.

Stocks - All of my guns are built for long range. I like a MBR for my self and a MCM Hunterbenchrest for a hunting gun.

1. Buy a Savage target rifle. Recently they have won some prestigious matches out of the box,pi$$ing some folks off!)

2. Do what I did; Bought a Savage Precision Target Action, a Shilen bull barrel pre-fit select match in 243WIN,get your brand of choice and caliber of choice. Get a used stock or buy a new 'ready to finish' from Sharp Shooters Supply. Now you have all the components except scope. Put the gun together yourself, plenty of directions on line. Buy GO and NO-GO head space gauges as well as a barrel wrench, also from Sharp Shooters Supply. For a scope, I won't get into a contest here, but Pentax, Burris and Sightron come to mind.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm still thinking custon action but I will have to give this one much thought I'm looking at one platform for both calibers,my project funds are not unlimited)and I'm still considering the purchase of a used rifle already built, then adding the barrels that I want. This will be a good winter project for me I think. Any more ideas out there, let me know what you're thinking!
Thanks again
Mark

Markr, if money is no object do what my kid does, he spends 8G a year on custom stuff to compete with my 1K stock Savage. He does get alot of enjoyment with the build though.

Shooting a factory gun is way too easy...
Show up with a factory Savage at a match and people will look at you like you've got the mange or something...:D
Really, I'd like to build something without built in excuses. Please note my signature line...
Thanks
Mark

Hey Markr, thats pretty funny stuff, I got over what people think of my equipment a long time ago. It's what they think after the smoke clears that counts.

For informal club shooting, without weight limits. Savage + Nightforce Benchrest scope.
Get a couple of barrels and they wll keep you busy.

I would love a custom gun, but dont have the money or the skills for one. :)
