I need info for Anschutz

I am just looking to add an upgrade to my 22 LR guns. I shoot long range steel mostly, no benchrest. I have a Kidd Supergrade and a CZ 455 Varmint, that shoot very well. I am at a Anschutz, but I don't know much about them. What action do I want? What trigger? etc. info please. I want a repeater. I am looking at a Vudoo V22, but the price is out of my range.

You can't go wrong with any of the Annie actions or triggers. I'd just make sure that they rifle specs will do what you want it to.

If the Vudoo is out of your price range then all but the Anschutz 64 is too. They are good rifles. The Anschutz 54 very nice but similar in price to the Vudoo. They don't offer many options for repeaters, but that may change. Anschutz North America is also run by good people.

64MPR is the obvious answer. Target quality, conventional style repeater.
Doesn't sound like you want to move to a full 3P or bench gun or down to a lightweight sporter barrel.

Look at it and see if there is anything not to like.

Based on your description/criteria I would recommend the 1710 HB. It comes with a single stage trigger that simple spring swaps can easily (and cheaply) be reduced to under a pound. You can use 5 or 10 round mags and a swivel mounted bipod (Harris type) is easily installed.
If you look around (and spend the $$) a Match 54 repeater can be had that accomplishes the same thing but has a trigger option that is out of this world.
With all due respect to the 64 based rifles (and their owners) I would save my pennies, sell plasma, work extra shifts, give up smoking, drinking, and other (ahem...) “vices” to raise the cash to buy one of the 54 type actioned rifles.

I am happy with my 1416 HB sporter . I understand the action difference between the 64 and 54 but the 64's can shoot as well as the 54's for a grand less money. mine seems to shoot better than I can. here is my best five shots at 50 yards and I have had a few .160 ish 4 shots and I lost a shot for a .350 something to .400ish. not bad for a sporter 64 eh... most guys I talk to say you can expect .200 to .300 with good match ammo and I would say mine shoots quite well. the 1416 HB has the 5098 trigger and I am used to a jewell 1.5oz on my BR rifles and the 5098 takes a little getting used to but is a nice trigger.So five shots you can almost completely cover with a back of a 22 case at 50 yards what's not to like. But I feel there are a lot of less expensive 22 out there that shoot as well with a good driver. I believe most can not shoot a 22lr as well as they can shoot. I can't wait to shoot mine tomorrow.

Ah I was out at the range this morning plinking at 100 Yards. I really dont know what kind of groups you expect from a 22lr at 100 Yards. my small group was a .610 my big group was a 1.125 ish with four of them went .378 so I was bummed the first shot went high I guess it was me, it's not a BR rifle then the next four were .378 So yea I was expecting to hit a few 1/2 groups but I was not shooting well. it happens. but fun to get out and shoot a little. It is a real good time getting a few of us together and shooting bottles, cans and what ever at 100-200 yards even a few at a 300 yard gong'er. just pure fun 22lr shooting.

I've had multiple Anschutz over the years and still own a few. My 64 MPR was my first venture into more of a target rifle than the sporters I had before. It shoots very well and on some days, will run with my 54.18. It's really hard to go wrong with a 54 action Anschutz, but don't sleep on some of the heavy barrel 64 actions.

Another option is to find a Sako P94 FinnFire Range or Varmint model. They shoot exceptionally well and can be found for less than a Grand if you're careful. The Sako Quad's can be very good shooters too.

If you're looking at used rifles, the Kimber K22 SVT's, Cooper 57M's and several others can be very accurate. My Cooper's run neck and neck with my Anschutz.

FWIW, the Vudoo's do seem to be the hot ticket right now. I'll find out in about 6 weeks, I hope...

Look I don't think it's great shooting by any standards I think it is capable of better not sure I am. But I think any time you are shooting 5 shot groups at a 100 Yards with a 22lr and you can cover the groups with a quarter that ain't bad. What do you think ?

I would ask why ? Well Eley Tenex are 2 groups left side of target, the last of what I had. Yes the Eley Tenex has shot very well. the three other groups are SK Standard +. Also shoots very well maybe even better that the Tenex. I have not had a chance to try RWS R-50 yet or any Lapua but I am going to. I also have some old WW super HV HP that shoots quite well but want to try some Eley and RWS HV HP just to see. But I have shot a lot of stuff at 50 Yards and most of it shoots decent.

The reason why? Most serious.22 rimfire shooters understand that any particular rifle will most likely have a preference for the ammo it shoots best. If you are real serious you will even test separate lots of the same ammo and will most likely find that your rifle will prefer one lot over another. How do I know, because I have experienced it.

I would say your 64 action rifle is doing just fine!

I have 3 54 action and 3 64 action Anschutz’s at the moment and the 54’s consistently outshoot the 64’s. If you can afford a 54 you won’t regret buying one!

I am happy with my Anschutz 64 Repeater. It didn't break the bank and it shoots pretty good with the right ammo. The action is not as nice as a 54 or 40x repeater, but I don't shoot it that much anyway. For my once a month 22 match, for fun at the range, or most often while waiting for the centerfire barrels to cool down, I love it! Will it compete at BR? No. Will it get beat super high-end 22's? Usually. At our monthly match it's me, not the rifle that gets beat. My biggest gripe is the magazines; they are expensive, work poorly and are a pain to change on the clock.

If I had it to do over again, I would still probably get the 64

Top target is Eley Target $6 per box 50y
Bottom is CenterX $11 per box @ 50y
The CenterX does better at 100-250y but the cheap Eley is good for close in and positional shooting

Can you elaborate on why the magazines work poorly? Also, how smooth is the bolt? Can you stay on the scope and on target when operating the bolt? Any failures to extract? I am seriously considering an Anschutz for NRL22 as I recently sold my Sako Quad Range that I used for a few matches(bolt was stiff for my taste).

TEN (10) shot group at 50 yards. NRA 50 yard target. SK Standard Plus ammo. Anschutz 1710 D KL bought barely used (pristine) 5 1/2 years ago for $1200.

I'll give it a try for you.. Magazines are around 60 bucks but the main thing is you can get them. I believe there is another Magazine that will fit in them that cost less, Guys at Rimfire Central can help you there.
The Magazines fit tightly up through the bottom metal and is sometime difficult to get one shoved in if in a hurry. requires a smooth well thought out action, ya just dont shove them in, They feed well and straight.
The magazine release button is very stiff and requires a strong finger to push it to release the Magazine.
The Bolt lift is kind of stiff to cock when lifting. All the 22's I have are that way at least the ones that shoot well. So you may not like that but you can add a bigger bolt knob that I am sure would help that.
Bolt smoothness My1416 if lubed as Anschutz recommends and I add a little grease runs quite smooth. I here the 54 actions are smoother but I have no issue with my 64 action.
Extraction I have never had a issue. Now Ejection is story in its self. Some dont eject well. I will ask we dont get into it but it may require some tinkering with the ejector/extractor blades but it can be fixed if you would have a problem with it not ejecting well.

They are soooo small and the magwell is small too. The five rounder work well, but our matches pretty much require 10 rounders. As FJIM said, it hard to get them into (and out of) the little magwell when you are under pressure. There is definitely a joke about about teenage boys and girls in there somewhere

It is no centerfire action for sure. That said its not bad for a 22. Mine has smoothed out over time, but its no Fortner.

Can you stay on the scope and on target when operating the bolt?

Prone is no problem at all. Hanging off a pms barricade (or Hoser's Evil Cheese Wedge) you can come of the scope for sure. But that happens sometimes with my 17lb match gun if I'm not careful.

Any failures to extract?

Nope! Been great in that category.

The magazines from Anschutz are $80 for a 10 rounder. Look at them, they are ridiculous, but such is the game we play. There are some Savage magazines that will work, but the 10rd'ers may require fitting for $25. I also installed the extended mag release to help.

I have to say that everything is a compromise. Nothing is perfect. It's really about what you are willing to spend. I will say once more that the guys at Anschutz NA really took good care of me and I am a loyal customer now.
