I bought a sps brand new,20" barrel,I didn't shoot it until I got a h-s precision stock,it was used and it look like it had been bedded about a inch or two forward of the recoil lug.it grouped really good,I just didn't like it because it was hard to keep still.so I ordered a bell and Carlson with the wide forearm on the bottom for bench shooting.now I can even get close to what it grouped like with the h-s stock?
Do I need to bed the bell and Carlson stock?do I bed it the inch or so forward of the recoil lug?

Personally I would bed it. And as far as bedding any portion of the barrel, that's debatable. I choose to bed 1 inch of the barrel if its a sporter weight. I completely free float it if it's a heavy barrel.

The purpose of bedding is to get as tight a fit as possible. I would bed then entire action.

Bed the whole action. From the recoil lug back to the tang. Nothing in front of the lug.. Just my two cents .. Tommy Mc..

I've never had to bed a Bell and Carlson stock which contains the aluminum bedding block.

All my rifles including sporter weights are free floated. Are you sure it's the stock and not something else? What was difference is group size between the H&S and B&C stocks?

Sinclair used to sales an adapter that attaches to the stock for bench shooting that provides a flat bottom. You may want to try that on the H&S stock since that stock gave you the best groups.

I made the same mistake. put a bell&carson on my Remington instead of h-s precision. bell&carson shot just under 1in no matter what I tried. h-s precision shot under 1/4 in no matter what load I put in it! best group so far .184 10 shots@ 100yds.

My experience has been the complete opposite. I have yet to ever find a production stock that has a bedding block that fits my action 100%. Honestly, I've never seen one that fit the action more than 20% . I bed all of mine with at least a skim bed. If you want to check yours take it apart and see how much or little the bedding block has worn a spot on the bottom of the action.

You're probably right about the fit; in fact B&C states in their literature that accompanies the stock that additional bedding may be required if you're not satisfied with performance.

However, in my case over the years I've replaced four Remington factory "plastic junk stocks" with 2 B&C stocks and 2 Hogue stocks (all with bedding blocks). The improvement was significant especially on the Rem Model 7. In all cases I was able to obtain consistent groups in the 1/2 moa area with tailored reloads so I was happy as a ghog in a bean patch:). This met my performance standard for a varmint / predator rifle so off I went and never looked back. Maybe some or all would be improved with additional bedding but for me I'm ok as is. However I can see where a target shooter would want the ultimate performance so you're point is well taken since I doubt that any production stock fits 100%. I just never, so far, had the need to go further.

I completely agree about the factory stocks being junk...they are indeed very very basic. The biggest aide that bedding has provided for me in the guns I have with the bedding block has been the ability to remove the barreled action from the stock for cleaning purposes and then reassemble and upon checking my zero find it only off maybe an 1/2" at 100 yards.

I currently have 4 H-S stocks. Two I skim bedded having never tested them before bedding and they are great. Another one is a sporter stock I have on a 7STW and now 28 Nosler and all that was ever needed with it was to bed the recoil lug. I had planned to come back and skim bed but it shot so well I have not touched it. The last H-S stock is on a varmint rifle and I only just recently skim bedded it after having used it as a drop in for the past 8-9 years. Hard to say if it helped because the rifle shot great anyway and if it did it is minimal.

B&C are a crap shoot. I have 7 and they are a good value stock but usually take some work to get them right. None of them have ever worked as a true drop in so they are all skim bedded and work great. Something to consider and keep in mind is B&C QC and CS sucks. I purchased a B&C stock that not only had the inletting off center but the action screw hole spacing was wrong. I had already started to open up the barrel channel when I noticed this and they refused to honor the warranty because I had already modified the stock, again only slightly. INSPECT EVERY PART OF A B&C STOCK AFTER YOU RECEIVE IT.

The Accu-Risers that I linked above IMO are the best way to bed these aluminum bedding block stocks. Very easy to do.
