I need Help finding a Gunsmith!

I'm a young man in the military with dreams of having my own tactical rifle but not enough money to spring for custom rifle... I do have a Rem700 Sendero SF II in 300winmag that I would like to put some money into to get the most out of the factory barrel...I was thinking of doing the "Accurizing Package for Bolt Action Rifles" offered by Impactguns.com http://www.impactguns.com/store/accurizing_package.html
The Package Includes
True up the action, bolt and recoil lug
Check all threads and clean up as needed
Pillar bed,or glass bed if the gun has an aluminum block)
Trigger work, 2.5-3 lbs
Set back barrel and re-chamber with Match reamer
Check crown with scope and re-crown if necessary

Does this seem like a good deal for $379.00?... I am willing to pay more for quality if any of you feel that they are not up for the task...Im also scared of getting ripped off...I'm pretty unsure of what and who to go to...The impact package seems good but I guess I'm really questioning there reputation...I'm sorry for rambling I need guidance from you older and more knowledgeable fellows...Thank...Help Please

noz455sd:

I don't know who Impact is and their web site identifies no one by name. I have never heard of them before. Their price seems low and turn around short. I see flags going up all over. You are a young man representing us in the military. I would hate to hear you had been taken advantage of. All the reputable gunsmiths I know of that have a web site have a section about themselves and their experience and accomplishments.
I would ask for refrences, I would ask if they have Professional Liabilty Insurance. I would ask what training and experience they have.

Thanks for the input guys...I think I will try to go to a gunsmith listed on here for my work... probably GAP...Or any others that anyone is willing to recommend...thanks

noz455sd, you have an excellent smith close to you.Kirby Allen,Allen Precision Shooting) in Ft. Shaw.I just got my 300 SAUM Sendero back from him.The work is first rate and the gun shoots excellent. He can be reach at kballen@3rivers.net

One thing I would suggest is not to bother with the factory sendero barrel unless your shooting the gun for some factory class competition. If your going to go through the cost of accurizing, invest in a match grade barrel, you wont be sorry.
I had Kirby order a reamer closer to minimum spec and with a deeper throat for the 300 SAUM.My intention was for 180 gr bullets and so far the Accubond,Ballistic Tip,Matchking and Berger 185 VLD have given excellent results.
Good luck however you go.

Chris,

In the Kalispell area is John King. He is a superb gunsmith who has built many world record guns. I don't think he's doing stock work right now, just chambering and metalwork), but you should call and check:

John King
P.O. Box 368
Kila, MT 59920
Phone:,406) 755-5352

I'm another shooter who would not recommend going through that kind of work and spending that kind of money only to retain the factory barrel.

I've found that a truly reputable 'smith will tell you the same!
