I just gotta tell somebody.

Having a service rifle match at our club tomorrow and I wanted to participate so I loaded some Sierra Game Kings in some Rem 30-06 brass for grand-daddy's old 1903 Springfield and headed for the range this afternoon for some sighting. The match involves standing, sitting, and bench with no support, so cartridge accuracy is not a great concern to me - I just let 'em fly toward the big dot on the target as it goes by.

I started at 50 yards and after making some sight adjustments moved the target out to 100. I made a couple of more shots and then moved to different bull. I was using a front rest only and with iron sights I fired five shots into one ragged hole (.475"). I have no idea how, but needless to say, I packed up and went home with my 1/2 inch rifle.

Never do it again in a million years.

Hey! Every once in awhile, everything flies straight! I have YET to shoot a group in the .300 at 300 yards. One day I was shooting my 6.5 x 47 and I had 4 bullets in a hole>>>I just needed the 5th to go in there and I KNEW I would have my .300" group! Well the 5th one opened it up to .437" BUT the first 4 shots were in .111">>>Now if only the 5th would have gone a bit closer! LOL!! Be glad you got your group! I am still waiting for mine!! Hahahahaa!!

Not sayin it didn't happen, some days all the sun and moon and stars just line up for us. but this reminds me of this old joke for some reason:

An 80-year-old man went to his doctor for his annual check-up.
The doctor asks him how he's feeling. The 80-year-old says, "I've never felt better. I now have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?"

The doctor considers his question for a minute and then begins.
"I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid trophy hunter and never misses a season. One day, when he was going out hunting, he was in a bit of a hurry and accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun. When he got to the creek, he saw a prime beaver sitting beside the stream of water. He raised his cane and went 'bang, bang'.

Suddenly, two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead. What do you think of that?"

The 80-year-old said, "I'd say somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver."

The doctor replied, "My point exactly."

You did it today, you can do it tomorrow. Best of luck ......

Thanks, but propping on my rickety body is a little tougher. But as you probably all know better than I, it's a confidence booster when you know your equipment will do it's job if you do yours.

Set that target in a frame with a picture of the rifle and proudly hang it on your wall...it's a keeper!! Good shooting, Gary.

I am not really suprised by that group. Those darn Springfields can really shoot. I have a 1943 Remington all original 2 groove, and with my cast lead load I have shot multiple groups right at 3/4''. If I shoot one bigger than an inch I usually know it because my eyes can only handle so much. I would say its an honest 1 moa rifle.

How many front sights are on the rifle? I usually see at least 2 on mine.

Hey....You guys are cheatin if you can see 2 sights...I always close both eyes so I don't see any...but better groups that way.

I have 4 03-a3's one being a 03 with a star gage barrel. The best shooter is my 2 groove remington and the smith corona coming in a very close second. The star gage is really sweet but I always reach for the remington made one.

Oh wait I do that any ways.
