I just acquired

a very nice CZ 527 M .223 carbine. I has a 1-9" twist barrel. I tried, for the first time, some Remington factory loads with a 50 grain bullet. Just to check scope alignment I started out at 50 yds. I did a small .. with the right two bullets pretty much overlapped.

I moved to 100 yds and did my best to zero the scope. The last shot was an inside ten on the IBS 100 yd score target. Pretty encouraging.

I would be interested in comments from anyone owning one, rifle or carbine, on their experience regarding best bullet and powder in their rifle. No0 need to give weight but if you want to that's fine. I wish it was a rifle but beggars can't be too choosey!! TKS

I have the 527 full stock version of that rifle.

I got it back in maybe 2016 and when you could find super cheap hornady bulk 55gr fmjs and soft points. I bought 4k of the 55gr BTSPs at something crazy like 7 cents a round. Used it for a full season of CMP high power format shooting. But at 100 yard reduced targets.

The best powders were Benchmark and H4895. The trick I found was ignoring all those load recipes with 3100 and 3200fps velocities. If I kept it right between 2900 and 2975 i would shoot amazing. 3/4 inch 5 shot groups reliably off a bench with rests. Given mine is a full stock, I had to manage barrel heat while shooting a 5 shot group. However it's not a match rifle it's my fun gun at the sandpits.

Shooters world match rifle was another good powder for it. Honestly anything in the burn rate from h4891 to blc2 worked well. I never did try any other bullets. Other than some speer 45gr flat nose bullets that I used unique to get down to 1100 fps.

I don't have that rifle, but I shoot a lot of 223 Rem in a lot of bolt rifles from twists 8 to 12.

For the 9" twist, I got my best results with 55 Nosler BT and 60 Vmax bullets.

The 223 Rem responds well to a wide range of powders. Powders that I have used with success are H 4895, IMR 4895, H 335, Benchmark, and Varget, the latter especially with the 55 and 60 grain bullets.

but in the competitive world.. Smallbore is 22LR.. ie sling prone or 3 position or Smallbore F-Class..
OP didn't mention smallbore - just .223.
Greg, my limited experience with .223 is via a Rem. 788 which I acquired last fall - it's a 1:12" twist. With decent bullets, the different twist won't amount to much. I'll e-mail you some DATA and pic. RG

I was only responding to the person I originally quoted. I be glad to delete my post if you all want to continue to argue about it
