I just gotta say this?

Bach stated that there are 3 types of music....(1) To glorify God (2) To edify the soul (3) Devilish Hubbub. Where does Van Halen's fall?

I wonder who here destroyed their rock n roll music back in the 70's when the media/ fearmongers started the "play it backwards" scare. ???

My era of rock. When I first heard Running with the Devil I was in High School. Such a different vibe than everyone else was doing at the time. I had never heard someone seemingly rip a guitar apart and make it sound so good. Great talent gone.

Oh man, that groaning, scraping sound that resembled two battle ships colliding -- we'd never heard that before, at least not the way he would use it and mix it into the tune.

When they started up, my roommate at the time got the first Walkman, and I had the cassettes. Probably did my hearing twenty years worth of damage in a month.

At what he did, he was the best. jd

To edify the soul, but not in the context of religion.
I’m not saying that listening to a great guitarist such as Eddy Van Halen or a great vocalist like Sammy Hagar was a spiritual happening, but it did instill enjoyment, which perhaps the more prudish among us find unappealing.

listen to the lyrics in “ Best of Both Worlds”. They kinda sums up what my thoughts on life are.

My above post shows just how old I am. I did not post that to offend anyone but to me nearly all rock and roll is racket rather than music. I'll take Chet Adkins, Roy Clark, Merle Travis or Doc Watson over any "rocker".

James, I grew up in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. My musical perspective was molded in that era.

The first time I heard James Burton play that solo lead in Ricky Nelson’ s cut of “Hello Mary Lou”, I knew I had to have a guitar.

I can feel just as spiritual playing that as I can my version of “ Victory in Jesus”.

Every human being is a flawed soul. Tragically, many great men of genius also are plagued with demons that drive them. Mozart by all accounts lead just about the same kind of life as Eddy Van Halen, burning the candle at both ends.

Both were, and will be, one of a kind.

Well yeah....but Eight Miles High and Coming Back to Life? For me...a spiritual happening...one bad, one good.

Well good for you, listen to what YOU want . Not sure why you would post a negative comment about "Rockers" when a Legendary Rocker just died .

Started in a Rock and Roll band as a high school sophomore in 1959, heard them all, from Chuck Berry (my opinion; his guitar playing doesn't get the attention it deserves) and Duane Eddie through Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to the present. Eddie Van Halen was one of the best ever and has inspired generations of young guitar players. We will miss him. RIP, Eddie.
