I inherited a .17-222 and will I find any ammo out there?

I can only find material on reloading, necking down 223 brass and I don’t want to begin such a project. I reload shotgun...12-20 and 28ga and I’m not sure if I need another endeavor.

17-222 is not a factory cartridge. No, you will not find factory loaded ammo.

If you do not want to invest in reloading press and dies, etc, your best bet is to find someone who is reputable and knowledgable who is willing to load for you, and then buy dies.

Or jump in yourself. It is a rabbit hole....

Saubier.com has a few 17-222 shooters.

You may want to sell the rifle as well.

If you think you will someday use it, keep it if the person had importance to you.

Do you varmint hunt?

On a slightly different approach, necking 222 (easier than trying to use 223) to 17 involves a speciif die, or a 222 Bushing die with 17 cal bushings.

What rifle is it?

A different thought....if the rifle has value...either as sentimental or real...you might just have it rebarreled in a factory caliber, something you will use. If it is a 17-222 you could do any of the 223 family....222, 223, 204 ruger, etc.
Beat me to it. I was going to suggest 204 ruger for prairie dogs or 223 for paper

As stated, any .373 bolt face cartridge is eligible for a swap to bore dia of choice. Your tastes are - yours. If the bbl has a decent bit of life, pedigree, you might be able to sell and put toward rebarrelling.
There should be some dies and components to accompany. Small rifle primers, powder? Dies would be a big plus. That could make some 17 boys a nice pkg deal.
Orrrrr, don't rebarrel, sell it all and put the $$ toward something you would not ordinarily purchase for your main interest, a splurge, mentally earmarking that bit of kit as from "Dear Uncle, Great Uncle or Gramps..... Just some options. ;) :)

I formed 17-222 from 222 Nosler brass. I definitely agree with others that starting with 223 is possible but much more difficult, 222 is the place to start as there are many good 222 brass manufactures.

I have a 17-223 that shoots great, its on an old 722 action and I kind of know the guy that built it. You probably wont get your good out of it since you aren't a rifle reloader already unless this would be your start. Either sell it or get into it. Just find out what the rifle is worth and don't get screwed. Gary

The 17-223 is a different animal than the 222 version. get 222 brass to start with. the .223 stuff gets thicker in the shoulder and I'm telling you it is NOT worth the trouble.
To just neck down 222 brass shouldn't be hard though. I have several neck down dies for my 223 but I really don't know that they are necessary.
Thinking of safety, unless you know someone to walk you through it, just sell it. Depending on how your chamber is cut you may need to neck turn. Just don't take any chances! Gary

I agree with comments above.....I load a few .17’s, but since I don’t necessarily need hundreds of cases for groundhogs or foxes l take the long laborious way around to make 17-222 cases. I first neck the the case down to .20-222,take an initial neck turn skim cut, run into my .219 form bushing and then run into 17-222 FL die, trim to length and then final neck turn cut. However, recently I discovered a funky way of setting up the 17-222 FL die so that in 2 steps/adjustable, 1.5 pulls of the ram I can fully form a well lubed virgin case using only the FL die. Below are 11 Winchester 222 cases that I formed using this minimal steps “funky” technique; cases trimmed to 1.704, neck turned for a .198 neck and annealed.415D3E44-9DC6-4020-AACD-0D87F9A649B9.jpeg

Put it in the classifieds and sell it, there are enough fans of oddball cartridges that it will sell eventually if fairly priced.

I bought a beautiful Sako chambered in 17-222. I then bought forming dies. This is one of those projects that I need to spend some TLC to form a large batch of brass. What I can tell you is that it makes you chuckle hearing the target impact, no scope shift, and then the rifle report (or at least that is how it feels). If you are going to rechamber it and stay in the .17 arena then give some serious thought to the 17 Fireball. No need for the extra powder of some of the larger .17 cartridges unless you are seriously chasing distance +300 yards to shoot PD or coyotes. If it is for fun, plinking, or within 300 yards then 17 Fireball is all you want/need, and you'll save on barrel life.

What rifle did you inherit, what brand. It’s a custom rifle obviously but what action is it built on? Post some pics and Let’s see if we can help.

I really enjoy my Sako 17-222 it has an older 10 twist barrel smithed by PO Ackley so I limit it to 25 grain bullets, the previous owner could not get it to group well with 30 grain bullets??I wish the OP would get back on and tell us about the rifle, even if he is just fishing for a sale.I use mine for a handy, walking type Varmint rifle. The 17-222 is a breeze to make brass for,my Javelina however takes a bit more time to produce brass though;)
