I have been trying to get a rifle to shoot well for a while and groups ran from a smallest of .95 to about 1.25”. Totally unacceptable for me.
The rifle is a new Remington 700/40X action. Single shot 308 Winchester with a Brux 1-9 twist. Yesterday after some less than stellar results I was going to post photos and ask for advice. However I hate not being able to figure things out. So I thought if I read the post what would I recommend? So I went and took the rifle apart. I noticed one of the action screws did not drop freely from the rifle. So I opened the hole up a bit. I then used MarineTex and bedded the scope base.

This morning I started load development all over. I started with seating depth being .001 into the lands. The result was a one hole group. Measure at .13”. The longest seating depth tested measured .75”. I almost ordered a new barrel last night because of the frustration. Glad I took my own advise.

I had an issue not long ago, when changing from a 30mm to 34mm scope. Sighted in OK,,sort of, then at 600, elevation was fine ( ie shots left and right on the waterline). Put it down to wind, ammo, new rear bag, old rear bag, the wife, traffic, leftist government, climate change...

Checked the ring to rail cross bolts... stripped thread - right on the point of tightening! Returned rings to gun shop and acquired new better etc, that have a proper torque setting instruction and a warranty!

Why do I always have to learn the hard way.

I was working on a Stevens Visable loader and couldn't get it back together. I laid in bed in a half asleep or maybe all the way in sleep dreaming about it. #am in that morning something hit me so I went down to see if by chance there was a plug in the right side of the receiver and guess what it was filled in with mud and some rust. I took a knife and scraped where I thought the slot would be and it was there. I unscrewed the plug and had it assembled in one minute. I was ready to beat it with a hammer and glad I didn't.
