I have a project here in my shop that I haven’t encountered yet.
what I have is a rem 40x 22lr bolt and my customer wants an oversized bolt knob installed
As some of you might know, the handle on these bolts are pretty darn skinny. The knob I have here has a male threaded stud so I’m gonna have to drill and tap the handle. I have a couple jugs but none of them will secure this 40x 22lr bolt.
do any of you fellas know of a jig that will work so I can spin this bolt true? Margin for error on this is very minimal.
I hate to reject a project but I’m not gonna mess this bolt up either.
any advise is appreciated

what about a female threaded one such as the Area 419 oversized knob for rimfire?

My approach may seem strange but it works for me . I weld piece of a 3/4” round stock to the bolt knob , about 2-3” long . I weld it in line with the future bolt knob . Then I insert the welded round stock in the head and start to thread the handle . After im satisfied I cut the old knob and my welded stub off .

Are you looking to drill and tap the existing bolt knob? Are you sure there is enough material to tap it? Usually you can turn the ball down to 5/16 in diameter and thread it. Then screw the knob on. Sounds like you want to tap it? Chuck the OD of bolt body in your horizontal indexing head and center up where you want to drill and tap. You can use an indicator to sweep for best condition...or eyeball it, lol

Here is how I do them.

Here's how I do them (use a PTG handle):

On the 40X rimfires, the standard 5/16 thread after market knobs won't work as there's not enough dimensional material where the handle transitions to the knob. That area is quite a bit smaller than the center fire 40X's/700's etc. factory handles.

A female threaded knob is the only way I'd attempt it..... -Al

problem solved i made a jig and all is well! Bolt is completed If i knew how to post pictures on my computer id show it off. LOL
