I got a reamer recommendation from PT&G today...

I talked with Mr.Kiff today, I told him I needed a reamer for a Rem 700 in .308

I said I wanted to shoot 185 Berger boat tail Match bullets in Lapua Brass from a Accuracy International magazine.

This is what he recommended:

.308 Winchester Match

.343 Neck

.088 Free bore

1 degree at 30

I have no idea what the last spec means - 1 degree at 30

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks

The throat angle is measured in degrees. A 1 degree 30 throat is 1.5 degrees - 1 degree and 30 minutes (60 minutes in a degree). Pretty common. What it affects is where the bullet meets the lands - the bigger the angle, like 1-45, the more bullet will be down in the neck of the case. Trust him - he knows whereof he speaks. His name is Kiff by the way.
You mean Mr. Kiff's name is Dave. ;D

Dave Kiff's the man when it comes to reamers!

Did you specify the Berger 185 grain HPBT Long Range or the VLD? Big difference.

HPBT Long Range!!

I hope he was paying attention. We spoke very briefly before he handed me over to an assistant.

Do the specs look right for the HPBT Long Range?

Fitter,
He won't grind your reamer immediately so call him and clarify so you get what you want.

The Berger 308 185 VLD and 185 BT both have a .471 bearing surface length if my memory serves me correctly. Neither bullet shoots it's best when the bearing surface seated below the neck shoulder juncture of the case. Most of the magazines made for a short action rifle are designed for a maximum 2.808" OAL. The 308 case trimmed to minimum spec is 2.005". There are shooters who load 185s in a short action magazine. But they are not getting the same performance as those shooting the 308 in a single shot rifle.

Just some food for thought.
