I dropped off my barrel blank, Reamer and action today.

I dropped off my Action, barrel blank, and rented reamer for 22creedmoor at the gunsmith today, but I forgot to bring a loaded round of the bullets I want to shoot. SAMMI specs are .081 for shooting up to 80gr ELDs, so it says "Copper Creek" bullets. I asked the gunsmith if he could throat it at .081. He said, "Well, if the reamer will go that far, " Then he said, " It's best to bring him a loaded round."

The comment if the reamer will go that far means...likely the reamer is a saami reamer, he wasn’t willing to throat the thing without a loaded round. I can see his point, he doesn’t want to go to far and end up on the hook for a new barrel because he didn’t have a ”dummy” round.

To make a chamber fit a loaded round the smith will probably have to use a throating reamer and I hate throating reamers. They can be a crap shoot. What's wrong with making your round fit the chamber?

I would call the place that you rented the reamer from and ask them what the specs on it are. Or get the number off the reamer you have and call who makes it and ask them what the specs are.

I would also get the smith a dummy round.

The reamer is going to cut the throat to whatever length that reamer is ground to. The only way to get a different throat length is to either use a different reamer, or use a separate throating reamer.

Yah, if I were going to throat I would need a dummy round or an ogive measurent. And a piece of brass and a bullet for a check round. I split the neck with a Dremel.

On Monday I dropped all my accumulated parts for the rifle including a rented reamer, Tuesday I provided him with a couple of Dummy rounds, Today he called me at 9:00 am saying "Your rifle is ready, and weave shipped the reamer and no-go gauges back to 4D" Now that is excellent service
