Was anyone here effected by the winter storm that just came through ?
After a day and a night in total silence
I went to home depot just for a look see. I expected they didn't have any. Well they had a bunch.
I walked away from the 650 price tag only to get to the parking lot, I thought of how it was gonna be all quiet and no electricity for days ....
I went back and got one .... 5k watt.
While I was assembling it guess what .....
....Power came back on.....
Damnit, damnit, damnit........ Damnit

Just dont leave fuel in it and youll have it from now on. I have 2 and here in yancey county we only had like 6". Didnt use my gen but i still have them if I need them .

I had that happen to me quite a few times. Get tired of waiting, go to hook it up and BINGO, on comes the power. I’m north of you, in Delaware. We get more of those types of storms than you do, usually. This one stayed south of us, thank God. Anyway, I’m glad you got power back.

For the East Coast blackout a number of years ago I bought a 9750 watt generator. The problem was that everyone around here was out of power. The dummies at Home Depot didn't know how to hand write up a sale. North of us about 100 miles they had power the whole time. So, I drove to Bay City, Mi and bought that generator, as my wife was sick and tired of all the blackouts we always get. When I got home we had power again but our son in law, daughter wer still out so I drove it over to them and hooked it up. They ran it 27 hours before the electric came back for them. We have used it many times since that first outing. You will too.

Living in southeast Florida, a home genny is a darn good idea. Mine gets run every month and the fuel gets changed every 6 months, always with fuel stabilizer for storage. Comes hurricane season, I put up 35 gallons of stabilized fuel & when the season is done, it gets burned up in the car.
A few suggestions, 1, always use alcohol free fuel with a stabilizer. You can get it at marinas and a lot of gas stations near bodies of water. The alcohol does NOT store well & degrades & is also corrosive to many engine parts not designed for it.
2, get a load panel to separate your home from the main power grid for when you run your genny. Alternatively, make absolutely certain you pull your main breaker before using the genny.
3, before you buy one, check out their noise levels. Some of them are VERY noisy and not just exhaust noise. A few hours around a noisy one & you'll be ready to turn the darn thing off just to give yourself some peace.
4, Get a BIG nasty chain, lock and a steel eyebolt driven deep into the ground or concrete. You will want to keep your genny yours until you're ready to sell it for a bigger one.
5, Make sure the genny has enough output to run your refrigerator, freezer and a microwave. Plus of course the lights & possibly a water heater.

We have propane gens at our FireDept. We have them set to automatically test run every monday evening . Hot water and heaters are propane so it was a no brainer to only have one fuel type .
done the same thing when we built our house,,

It would not hurt to get a Mr Heater Big Buddy heater as a back up, along with a couple 40 lbs propane tanks. If you live where it can get cold. I have three generators and three heaters. 1500 gallons of propane (1k and 500 gallon tanks), plus two 100 lbs tanks two 40 lbs tanks and three 20 lbs tanks... I live off grid and being cold aint gunna happened to this old man..

I have a gas fireplace. With fans its great.
A gas ran gen would be nice. I'd like a whole home gen. That may be in my future.

Refrigerator, microwave, tv, internet, lamps & maybe my water well ... I'll check it out when weather gets better.

Hot water would be nice. I guess cat baths with warned up water will do.

I think I’m 2009 a big ice storm hit Kentucky. Our little town of Leitchfield was ground zero. We sat in an all electric house for 15 days with out power! Since then we have switch heaters and water heaters to natural gas! Built a house last year and put in a 20K home generator which runs off natural gas! It’s been awesome!

I Taunt my buddy down the road. I tell him to call and let me know if the power goes out because I won’t be able to tell!!!

Propane , two 25,000kw kohlers one 25,000kw quiet source , one duel fuel 15,000kw generac . Propane , lasts for yrs with no mold like diesel , stale gas or even natural gas will likely get shut off in times of emergency ( ever since the burning pipe lines in New Orleans .
It takes a lot to keep the guns dry !

I bought a 5500 Watt generator after Hurricane Charlie came through Central Florida in 2004. I call it my good luck charm because I haven’t needed it since. It gets test ran twice a year before I drain the fuel and drag it back into the garage. I’m happy as a clam to not use it but always glad it’s there.

Yep we had an ice storm couple years ago.... no power for 17 days. Some were out for 25 days. Luckily I had a buddy that ran the hardware store in town and he told me about a close out sale on his Generac generators. Got a 23kw installed, runs on propane and that one ice event made it worth every penny. Think it was $4200 installed plus 500 gal propane tank. Money well spent as it will run the whole house

I have my own natural gas well that we are tapped directly into! So I think we have it about as good as it gets and it’s free!
