I am loking for a new scope for my 22-250 for P-dog hunting at 200 yards +

I am loking for a new scope for my 22-250 for P-dog hunting at 200 yards + i now have a Nikon buckmasters 4.5-14x40 on it , i would like to up grade . I have looked at Nightforce br scope for it, but would like some feedback on a good scope. My price range is 1,000 to 1,500.

I like a variable with something on the order of 20x and yet maintaining a relatively small objective. For both of my .22-250's and a .204 Ruger, I have Leupold Vari-X III's (one is a VX-III) in the 6.5x20x40 configuration. This gives the ability to reach out and touch them well beyond 200 yards, but if you dial down the magnification, you can still be on target to see the impact. At the 20x magnification, you are recoiling off the target, so only your spotter has the full "Red Mist" visual.

The glass on the Nikons is pretty nice too, and there are lots of good scopes for well less than $1000. I have ordered a Nightforce for my new Palma rifle, but I think they are a bit too much for a varmint rifle (personal preference...)

I don't have a knowledge of praire dog shooting but ground hogs here in the east I use a 4X12X40 leupold, more that enought for what you want. I had a Dot put in my 4-12 and never looked back. One thing is a plus is 50 obj head. Merry Christmas. Lou

I'm surprised youdon't like that optic for longer ranges. I have a 6-18x BM with mil-dot on a 17 Fireball XP-100 and 200 yds. is nothing for it on PD's. I use the reticle for windage reference and turret for elevation--works great!

I use Leupold 6.5x20 with Varmint Hunter or Zeiss with Rapid Z (both have hold over points for elevation and windage). I have tried one with a mil-dot but I do not like it as well. I prefer a scope WITHOUT the target turrets. My favorite p-dog medicine! Keith

Have you tried your current scope yet (on prarie dogs)?

I shot have used a 6.5-20x50 LRT leupold on a .308 for P-dogs, with a rifle this caliber if I want to see my hit, I usually use it on about 12x, well past 200 yards. I think you will be surprised at how well you can score with your current optic.

Prior to making our hunting trip we set up 12oz soda bottles in a field at various distances from 150-450yards as practice. 14x should be plenty to score hits on sod poodles.

Just my .02

Good luck with your hunt.

i shoot a 22-250, 221fb, both with 6x20 luepold 50m with top turrent knob, they 221 i set at 12-14x and shoot to 300 yd.
the 22-250 i set at 20x and reach out as far as 500-600 when the wind is not howling

get at least a variable and look for the luepold on the web, used as they have a lifetime warrenty

Food for thought..... Look at a 6x18 Shepherd http://www.shepherdscopes.com/ I have 4 of them and I kill a lot of Pasture Poodles using this scope on top of my .223's, 22~250, 204. (about $700) When you frist look in the scope there are a lot lines and circles in there, but they work well for reference point for different yardages.

Horus Predator, no more clicking, lots more hitting, easy off the top of your head math for range, just print a range card for your round in 1"/100yd SMOA numbers and go.

Another consideration...

Burris Black Diamond with the Ballistic Mil-dot reticle. Supposedly calibrated for the .22-250 w/ 55gr. bullets.

You can't go wrong with a 12X42X56 Nightforce with a double dot. If you can afford it. If not a Sightron 8X32X56 will do the trick for only about $800.00

Get a good quality scope. With plenty of power, 24X top end at least and 32X is even better.....you WILL use it, and when you do you'll be glad it's there. But to make it all work right, have a muzzle brake installed. The combination of no muzzle jump and high magnification will make your varmint shooting a whole lot more fun.
