HV 30BR, recoil pad or no recoil pad???

I am trying to decide if i should put a rubber recoil pad on my HV 30BR rifle. It goes to the stock man next week, and i just cant decide!! I have a nice polished aluminum pad, but i also have a Kick-eez rubber pad. Just not sure what to do. I thought i would see what your fellas opinion is. What do you think? Lee

It is just what you are used to. I have never owned a 6PPC. I shot a 308 and 6mm Ackley with free recoil for a long time. My 30BR with 112s, 118s, or even 125s isn't that bad to me. Now I tried some 150 SMKs with my 1:16 twist 30BR. I felt that. I have shot a few guys 6PPCs.... and I say what recoil??? Some of the 6PPC guys think the 30BR packs too much punch and move the bags too much in LV. I guess it is just what you used to. I would think think a rubber pad would lead too excessive movement on the return. But what do I know. I am a believer in the KISS principal. Luck, Tim

I am a good sized fella at 5' 10" 225. I am however recoil sensitive. I shot sporting clays for a lot of years and the recoil gave me the dreaded flinch! I had to use release triggers just to shoot. I am just under the impression that a 1/2" recoil pad isn't going to do all that much good. I do shoot free recoil, and i like the technique quite well. It works for me anyway. These robertson stocks come with nice aluminum butt plates and they really look sharp, but looks are not everything. I have a nice rubber Kick eez but it looks like butt on the back of this stock!! Winning is my main goal, and i wont be happy with anything less, and to do so i have to be comfortable. Heck i think a 10.5 pound 6ppc recoils to much. It doesnt hurt or anything, but i dont like it!! I will make a decision on my own, but i am kinda interested in knowing what route most folks go. That's the reason for the post. Plus i am bored!! LOL!!! Have a good evening! Lee

Being a shotgunner, you surely know of PAST recoil shields. What's wrong with that, other than maybe a dose of razzing like I get at deer camp every year for wearing a sissy bra to sight-in.

ask the stock man if he can put the pretty plate on the back of the recoil pad.....

i think you kinda answered your own question.... looks aren't everything-recoil sensitive-comfort-winning..!

recoil has never bothered me.. handguns-rifle-shotgun... but i sold a Rem.7m-mag. after 20rounds, i figured
if i'm gonna get beat up i mite as well own something i'd rather have.... a .338mag. instead

as for the bench stuff i like your idea "comfort" i'm just get'n started in the bench stuff waiting to pu a .30Br
together also... but i think it will go in a older 40X stock reason is i may put the barrel on 6Br gun an make a
switch barrel thing..

Lee,
FWIW coming from a relative newbie to the sport I find myself in the same situation you are in with regards to recoil. My father's 30br is a dream to shoot free recoil or just a light touch of the shoulder. He has a Franklin BR2000 laminate stock that was clear coated and the whole rifle weighs in at 13# 2oz. My rifle weighing nearly identical in a mcmillan/bruno stock has created quite a flinch for me. I am 6' 185 and would not consider myself "padded" by any means. I have gone to a past recoil pad and have, for now, found what I was looking for. I tried a slip on recoil pad briefly, but the balance of the rifle was off a bit. I am going to shoot the next couple of matches with the Past and see how it goes.
It has really helped my focus considerably. The touch sensitivity is much less so shooting free recoil will take some practice...you may wonder if you are actually touching the stock or not. I am experimenting with different shoulder pressures right now, but more than that I am just trying to break the shot real clean (no flinch, and not rushing/slapping the trigger). The Past takes the recoil away almost completely.

Skeet, as Mike said the type of stock may make a difference in felt recoil. My yellow 30br is an older mcmillan and my blue 30br has an edge on it and to me, the felt recoil on the edge is harsher maybe the butt design JMHO Mark
