Huskemaw Scope

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
Looking for opinions on this scope. My brother is considering this for a hunting rifle and maybe some informal target shooting.

You might check over on 24hourcampfire. They have been talked about over there.

I'll check it. I was hoping to get some trusted reviews here from the accurate shooter members. A.S. forum members are tops in my book. Hate to see my brother make a high dollar mistake.

timeout,,,if he wants the best scope out there it isnt a Muskamaw,,,its a March,,,look at Kelblys website,,I only see those scopes on "Best of the West!!" ((remember its is "TV" !!!)),,NOT on the fireing line at of a real shooting match of any kind,,,ooo shure you see an ocasional Mauser or 51 Studebaker out there being used by a Nimrod but the bonified competitors who have years of experience are not using them,,,,,Roger
PS,,,I know the March scopes are expen$ive but those Muskamaws areent cheep either,,,if you want a good hunting scope get a Leupold of some sort with target/tactical turrets and make a lil note card with the come ups for your particular cal/bullet/load for the various yards, 100-200-etc all the way out to 1000 if you like,,,,then just lazer the distance (or guess it ,,hahha) and then dial it in,,,,that is the problem with "custom" turrets,,,they only are correct with one load/bullet at one temp/alt/etc,,,,,I wouldnt go on a hunting trip ,,even here in the woods ,,,without my ballisitc tables taped to my gun stock or scope turret cap,,,

He was looking at it more for hunting. He was intrigued by the custom turret that is apparently made to directly dial up the yardage you are shooting. That would be a nice feature for hunting. His concerns would be reliability, clarity, turret setting "repeatability", etc. I'm sure resale value would be terrible on a scope without name recognition and a custom turret made to a particular hand load. While I'm certain that March scopes are the best of the best, us poor old country folk cannot afford to be carrying them on a hunting rifle. Thanks for the reply.

After watching the video and seeing that there providing custom turrets, I came to the conclusion there user friendly and with bonded lens like March and Nightforce the only thing I wonder about is the adjustments!

I did some searches on LRH. I'm thinking that my brother thought the elevation turret was marked in yardage. I don't think that is the case, only the the parallex. Clicks are also 1/3 @ 100 yards versus the common 1/4. Saw some satisfied user comments, but some of those may have a vested interest? Pretty risky purchase if he doesn't like it.

There are a great many ways to get the same functionality as the Huskemaw advertises...in a scope of proven reliability.

Just google "Custom Turret".

All scopes use bonded lenses - even BSA. Custom turrets are available from Leupold on the CDS scopes, and they are free and do not hurt the resale value. There was a few threads on this site many years ago, and the only person defending the Huskamaw was people that had a financial interest in them.

A lot of companies use Schott glass but they don't end up with the same quality! Leuplod and Burris imported there glass, I don't know where Burris is getting it now that Beretta and Steiner owns them and there mainly built in the Philippians !

I believe Sightron is offering custom turrets also! I have never seen a Huskamaw scope and wouldn't invest the money when I know there is other scopes out there and I like Higher magnification!

Well as all of you "speculate" about the quality of Huskemaw, but truly dont know a thing. I have actually seen them in action on the hunting field. Not sure why anyone has even posted here when not having any experience with the scope in question? hmmm...

my father in law has had one on his 6.5-300wsm for a few years now.
Glass is excellent, turrets track perfectly.. No fancy frills, just a good rugged hunting scope that is VERY reliable in ALL weather conditions. Id say glass quality is better than a Leupold Mark4, but just a hair less than NightForce. So I believe they have their prices set correctly. Turret repeatablity is equal to NightForce, so no worries there. They actually hold their value EXTREMELY well amongst hunting communities, so now worries there either.

Ask yourself this; How many used Huskemaw scopes can you find for sale? Theyve sold a boat load of em. People love em and so they keep em. Good scope to have IMO

I have a couple of friends with them.

They are manufactured in the same plant that NF sources its parts from. That doesn't mean that they are the same scope. They are built to a certain spec as the NF components are built to a certain spec.

An example is the 1/3 MOA adjustments.

The prices are pretty stiff.

I've got a NF on the high end, Redfield branded Leupolds on the beaters. I'll stick with that combo. YMMV.

I suppose the are getting pretty stiff. I remember when my father-in-law bought his, it was only about $1100. I thought that was a very fair price for what he got.
$1500 for the new Blue Diamonds are getting pretty close to NF prices. The Huskemaws are very good scopes, but for $1500, probably be better off spending a bit more and buying a NF. NightForce glass is a little brighter and a hair sharper anyhow.

This NF is for sale on the site right now. The included scope rings alone are probably worth $200+. If your brother wants a heck of a good deal on a top notch hunting scope for around $1500, this would be a good one.

GSPV is correct about the parts in this scope. I bought one while I was at a benchrest match in Cody Wy. After the match Jon Porter came up to me and asked if I was interested in shooting some long range equipment after the BBQ,and of course I jumped at the chance. For those of you that don't know Jon is a Hunter BR shooter that won the hunter Nationals several years back, and was on the ground floor of the development of this scope. I was shooting his rig with the Huskemaw scope at 800, 900, &1000 yds and this scope performed flawlessly, enough so that I bought one from Jon that evening.
Since owning it, I have a Winchester model 70 in 7mm mag 20moa rail and the Huskemaw scope, My mid range sight in is 500 yards and if you range your target and read the wind this scope will deliver the shot on target each and every time. The reticle is etched in the second focal plane so there is no correction once you go from 5-20 power, and the glass is crystal clear. I have shot 1 deer at 518 yds, laying in his bed at sunrise, I was shooting into the sun and it was tough seeing with the flare going on on the front lens, wish I had a sun shade on it , but bottom line I trust this rig and it delivers. There is a number etched on the turret above the yardage marks, which are the holds for windage. the other thing I like is the elevation turret has a lock ring on it once sighted in you snug this up under the turret lock the set screws and you never loose your intial sight in point, if you get confused or excited and forget anything its easy to go back to your intial dope. If I had the money I would probably buy the new lower power hunting scope, than use the current 5-20.

My hunting buddy has been using the pre-blue diamond husky for five yrs. It is a good hunting scope. It has always tracked well and put the round where we ranged it. He has killed at up to 514 yds, that was a Wyoming bull moose using a Berger bullet. They are not as good of glass as the Night Force. Both of my hunting buddies shoot GunWerks rifles, one is the Huskemaw 5x20 the other is the Night Force 5.5x22. I'm the guy with the cheaper setup Kreiger barreled 700 Rem with the Leupould 4.5X14. The older Huskemaw is a good hunting scope but not a target scope, I have not looked Thur the Blue Diamond model.

When thinking about hunting scopes, the Night Force 5.5X22 is better IMHO but it is too big and heavy (30oz) for me to carry. The older Huskemaw is a little smaller, I do not know about the weight. I use the 4.5X14 40mm Leupold LR (14oz) which is the smallest of the three and may be the lightest.
