I've done a search here for what I would like but haven't found a final solution. Looking for your suggestions for the following application.
- All purpose hunting scope for 6.5 Creedmoore and/or 7mm Mag at or below $ 1,000.00.
- Most likely 100-300 yard shots. 600 yard max expected shot.
- Would like a 50mm objective and best bang for the buck glass to make it as bright as possiable. I'd rather have great glass than more whistles and bells features that I probably will never use.
- Want a Second Focal Plane to keep reticle large at low power levels in order to have good contrast against brush or limbs in low light. Thin reticles can get lost in trees. Been there and I don't like it when it happens.
- I'm thinking an illuminated Center Dot Only type reticle for the above reason.
- I'm thinking a Fixed Parallax so I don't have to focus it if a target quickly appears and I'm standing without a support during a stalk. Adjustable Parallax (AP) scopes are great if your on a rest or in a blind with the rifle resting on a sand bag. The Depth of Field that is in focus is too shallow on the AP scopes that I've seen to be able to 'set it and forget it'. Not having to focus allows a much quicker shot to take place.
- I'm thinking something in the range of 2.5-15. I'd rather have the lower power than higher to get a better field of view if I need it up close and to keep image brightness as high as possiable. I've taken an elk at 652 yards with a 14 power and was not wanting more magnification when I pulled the trigger five minutes before legal shooting time ended. (It was dark when I finally got up the mountain to him). When the Exit Pupil gets too small as magnifications increase, the image can get too dark in low light of morning or at dusk. I have a Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 and it generates great image and brightness if I have enough ambiant light but the image noticably darkens above 15 power. I checked this with three other scopes of the same model and they all begin to noticably darken at 15 power just like mine.
- Would like a reticle with some kind of BDC marks so I can quickly shoot using the reticle rather than dialing for distance.
I was hoping to find a Meopta for this application (because I don't have any Meoptas yet) but I can't find one that has a fixed parallax at my price point. I'm sure the Meostar is an awesome scope but its out of my price range.
