Hunting Scope Anyone?

I have a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42mm on my 300WSM, and a 2.5-10x42mm NXS on my wife's 260. Both are made in the USA. My F-T/R rifle has a Nightforce Competition, which was made in Japan.

Edit: Looks like the OP has already bought a scope.

NightForce has always been Made in the USA other than the SHV as far as I knew..Well they are all assembled in the USA as far as I once knew..
Yea the March is just out of my price range.

An NXS 5.5-22 with all the bells will run about 2050.00 I sell the march 2.5-25 for 2350.00 with out ilum reticle. To me, theres no comparison. I used to be a big fan of NF. I only became a March dealer so i could get them cheaper for local guys. Any of the guys that shoot here. I'll sell to them at cost, just to help shrink their groups ;)

For a hunting scope you need a lot of light. The best way to get it is a large objective lens. As the magnification goes up you need to capture more light. The ideal is to have an objective lens that is the maximum power times 5. You are going to find it impossible to get there with anything over 12 power. So then you have to buy optics that transfer the most light possible. Leupold and Nikon are fairly average in their optics - there are better but there are worse too. Trijicon and Night Force are good quality glass but don't limit yourself to 40 mm objective lenses. Get at least a 50mm - yes I know they are more expensive but they are also much better in low light conditions.

Happy with my 40mm. Hunted quite successfully in the early morning and late evening rain with my earlier VX-3 and the VX-3i should be at least as good. Considered larger diameter scopes, but they are simply too large for hunting for me. YMMV.

One of my newest scopes is the NightForce SHV {shoot hunt varmint}. I have it on one of my hunting rifles. I really like the way the reticle is and I like the way it is lit. Just the center cross and you can dim it way on down so it doesn't knock out your eyes after being adjusted to low light.
I just got back from a hunting trip to my cabin in the mountains and unfortunately the scope was not as good a light gatherer as I had hoped for. It just wouldn't hang as long as I needed it to for bear. They are normally pretty nocturnal and if they come out at all in any light it is usually the last few minutes of any light. it has a big objective and it has a 30mm tube but the glass quality to get you right up until dark is just not there. Again, I really like everything else about the scope, wish I could say better about the glass.

I am in the boat of wanting a scope for a light weight Hunting rifle. The NF SHV 5-20x56 is hands down the best foul weather Hunting scope I own. No matter the condition's fog, rain, snow just dark and gloomy days it always looks the same and functions flawless. But it is big and bulky..And I use it and have used it for two years on two different 10.5lbs rifle's I hunt with..So I am spoiled with it. I want a light weight scope with a MOA reticle and can dial it out to 1K if I want to..There seems to be nothing out there that is not heavy. I have been looking at a Burris 4.5-14 Fullfield E1.
I have a 20 moa windage adj base and I think it could work.

this is clearly first choice for your needs.

Are you joking with me or do you have any experience with the Burris Fulfield E1 4.5-14 ?

I have one in route to me. I have a 20moa one piece windage adj base, so I can get it sighted dead on at 200 yards with the scope centered..then I should be able to dial it to 1K if I want to or I can hold over the MOA needed...I am going to try it on this light weight rifle and see how it works.

I was trying to add that to the above comment about the NF SHV scope recommended by 2 others.

Well I mounted a Burris fullfield 4.5-14 E1 long range MOA reticle. It is basic a 2nd focal plane 1moa line reticle.
only having 40moa elevation and windage. I used a 20moa base with windage adj rings to get it sighted in dead on at 200 yards with only two clicks in windage and I sill have 25 moa up..which is enough to get me to 1K and I doubt I shoot that far hunting..The optics are good. bright and clear. I was shooting at 7am still kind of dark, raining and foggy enough that you could not see past 300 yards..and it looked good and I was able to see well enough to shoot 200 yards.
I have not had time to do a tracking test..but field shooting I hit a six inch flat rock at 600 yards holding over on the moa line...I held 9min and just got over it..so I held 8.5 min on my second shot and hit the rock..then shooting at a spot in a gravel road 800 yards holding over on the moa lines..one load at 16 min and another load was only 13 min..but we were close and hit a few times...good fun and practice. I still need to do some tracking test but I think it will be fine.
IMO a useable hunting scope, mounted properly and at 15oz...to keep a light weight rifle light and have accurate long range compensation. Also at $ 334.00 shipped a great value in a useable optic. mounted on a light weight 240WMIMG_0819.jpg

I will add it is a cheep scope...Weird turret zero..just hold down on turret to keep from moving and use a bullet or small screw driver to turn the turret to zero..No zero stop...12 mins in one turn..mushy soft clicks..enough field of view but not big.. looking 600 yards at a 6" rock..clear,bright and able to identify a target and get a fine hold...jump on my 5-20 SHV and a bigger brighter awesome field of view on 20 power..looks great..But the little burris is more than clear enough to do the job..I consider the weight, price ect and would rate the burris as a usable hunting optic.

I will almost bet the metals used isn't all American made . Larry
You are likely correct. Most all aluminum smelters in the USA have closed. Generally need cheap hydro-power (Canada, etc.) or government support (China) to be competitive. Like steel, China continues to produce aluminum into an over-saturated world market for home political reasons.
